Hello, all. First fanfiction in a while, if you can call it that. It's a very short, one-shot about Janine Kishi. I'm not really sure where I intended to go with it as I just started typing and this is what came out.
Characters copyright to Ann M Martin.
Janine loves her computer.
She knows that the girls in the BSC mock her for it. She hears their sighs, every time that she tries to explain something. She has heard them call her boring. She only explains, because they ask her. She doesn't mean to bore them.
She hears them laughing at her. Wondering if she is surgically attached to her computer, if she has friends.
Janine thinks them idiotic. She thinks that they are too hung up on being cool. Janine may wear sensible clothes, skirts and flats. But, she looks a lot more presentable than the concoctions that her sister puts together. Her style is not unlike Mary Anne's. Sure, Janine may wear glasses, but they are the black, square type, the models glasses of choice. Janine may be a geek, but she has nailed geek-chic. At SHS, the geek-chics have their place in the cool crowd. Liking computers is not a bad thing.
And Janine is going places. Janine does have friends. Janine is much cooler than anyone would ever know.
She feels sad and she feels wistful that her sister's friends laugh at her. She laments the fact that her sister doesn't know her. Janine doesn't mean to make Claud feel stupid. She just thinks that there are lots of wonderful words in the world, so why not use them? Sometimes, she secretly wonders if Claud is actually as smart as everyone makes out that she is. Janine thinks that everyone should just get off her case and just focus on her getting through school and making use of the skills she does have. Janine knows that Claud is not smart.
Janine thinks that Kristy Thomas of the great ideas could learn a few lessons from Janine. She admires Kristy's drive and ambition. She also thinks that Kristy has no sense of compromise and expects the unrealistic. She thinks that Kristy should embrace the use of the computer for the BSC. Her parents offered to buy a computer for Claud. Claud said no. Janine thinks this ridiculous. Claud would have a spell checker at her fingertips and would be able to turn in presentable reports. She'd find researching much easier. She could get into graphic design. It's another form of art, right? And even better, the BSC clients could email in their requirements. The calendar could be used electronically, reminders of jobs popping up.
It would make the BSC a lot more efficient. After all, they've been using the notebook forever now. Janine did try to explain this to Kristy. She was trying to be helpful. Kristy, however, thanked her with a patronising, 'I don't think so.' Janine wonders if they'll ever get with the times. Sometimes, it seems that they're stuck in the past.
Janine smirks to herself. Janine the geek had a computer long before everyone else did. They all say that Stacey can predict the fashion future and is one step ahead. They don't realise that fashion extends beyond clothes. But this time, Janine was one step ahead. Janine was cool, before everyone else was. It's the BSC girls who are left behind.
Janine shrugs off her dressing robe and turns on her webcam.
