He's fourteen when he goes to Reconciliation and confesses that he's superstitious.
The priest listens to him explain his code of lucky and unlucky numbers, and how he adds together the hour and minute on clocks; if the sum is a bad luck number, he won'd do anything until it's changed.
The priest thinks he might have obsessive-compulsive disorder and suggests counseling.
After being absolved, he walks out of the confessional dissatisfied, knowing counseling is out of the question - and even if it were possible, he wouldn't go.
So he keeps on living, avoiding that priest at all costs.

"Are you superstitious?"
Avanna's question catches him off-guard. It's not really something he's thought about in years. In the field of music, there's no room for superstitious beliefs. He's learned to adjust to that and, he realizes, he's forgotten many of those beliefs together. He no longer lives by them.
So he quietly replies that no, he's not superstitious. After all, it's the truth, isn't it?
But a moment later, stealing a passing glance at his watch, his teenage self resurfaces and it's hard not to cringe.
The numbers add up to thirteen.
