Lawrence stepped into the doorway of Adam's room.
He looked at the clock by the bedside table. It was two in the morning.
Adam was fast asleep. Fully dressed, he was curled into a tight ball on the mattress.
Lawrence went over to the bed. He loved watching Adam sleep. He loved watching the younger man's chest go up and chest with each breath.
Sometimes Adam looked so peaceful.
Sometimes.
Most of the time, Adam slept fitfully. His dreams…no, nightmares…occurred almost every night.
Like now.
They were especially vivid and terrifying when Lawrence wasn't with him.
Lawrence scowled.
Jigsaw was the cause of Adam's unhappiness.
He was the cause of the unhappiness of so many people.
Lawrence, standing beside the bed, watched Adam. The younger man's face wore an expression of anguish.
Lawrence had seen that expression so many times when they had been trapped in the Bathroom.
Lawrence closed his eyes and let a particular memory flood his mind. For a minute, Lawrence was back on the bathroom floor, his ankle on fire after cutting off his own foot. He was covered in blood, grime, and tears.
So was Adam.
The scream of pain Adam had let out as he gripped his wounded shoulder was still fresh in Lawrence's mind. He could still feel Adam's sweaty forehead against his own. He could still see Adam crying as Lawrence spoke shaky words of comfort to him.
"We're gonna be OK?"
"I wouldn't lie to you."
He could still feel Adam's desperate grip on his arm as Adam begged him not to leave.
"Don't leave me!"
Lawrence had left anyway. It had been hard to do.
In his sleep, Adam began to whimper. His body began to tremor and tears began to stream from Adam's eyes.
"Lawrence…." Adam moaned. He began to sob. "Lawrence…."
Biting his lip, Lawrence sat down next to him. He put a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Please…come back to me," Adam continued to moan. "Lawrence…please…I'm all alone…I have no one."
Lawrence lay down next to Adam and put his arm around Adam's waist.
"Adam…" he murmured. "You're not alone…I'm right here."
Lawrence gently slipped his fingers through Adam's sweaty ones and gently gripped his hand.
Adam's tremors soon subsided.
Lawrence smiled. That always worked.
"I love you," Adam said, crying.
"I love you, too," Lawrence said.
He leaned down and gave Adam a gentle kiss on the lips. In his sleep, Adam stopped crying. Smiling, Lawrence gave Adam's hand another gentle squeeze. Lawrence felt Adam return the squeeze.
"I will never ever leave you," Lawrence murmured into Adam's dark hair. "I promise."
"Lawrence…" Adam whispered. "I miss you."
Lawrence gave Adam a kiss on the cheek.
"I'm right here," Lawrence said softly. "I always will be."
With that, Lawrence vanished.
