True Love Ways

Danny sat back, cold bottle of beer in his hand. He watched as his wife bustled around the kitchen and smiled to himself. He sometimes wondered what she thought of her life with him, she was loyal, funny and beautiful. She was his rock, the one solid constant thing that he had to come home to. The one person that he could always rely on in his life. She had stood by him when he had returned from Iraq, bitter and broken- damaged goods that barely knew how to function like a human being. She had supported him when he had become a cop, helping him to study for his detective's exams and rarely complaining when he was late home from work, or didn't come home at all. She had nursed him when he had been injured in the course of his duties and hadn't begged him to leave. Why did she do it? What made her so willing to support him and always be there for him? What made her willing to never push him when he needed space and to hold him when he needed comfort? He didn't understand, he just knew that he respected her more than any other human being, and loved her completely. He always would.

Linda could feel the weight of her husband's gaze burning into the back of her skull as she moved around the kitchen preparing dinner. Danny had just returned home from an extremely long week at work, he had come in and gone straight to the fridge for a beer before placing a gentle kiss on her forehead and greeting her. He had then sat at the table and silently sipped at his beer. She knew it must have been a tough case for two reasons- one he hadn't spoken about it to her and two he sat now silently, no adrenaline rush pushing him into laughing and joking- so something had to be wrong. She knew not to push him on it- Danny wouldn't talk unless he was ready to and he clearly wasn't ready to. He had always been the same- well he had since Iraq anyway. Quiet and withdrawn when things bothered to him, always dwelling on things until he needed a release- whether the release be beer after beer, or punching a wall. She just usually made sure that she was there when he was ready to unburden himself. She had always loved Danny Reagan, she had cried herself to sleep every night when he had been posted to Iraq- terrified that he wouldn't return. When he had returned to her battered and broken she had cried herself to sleep at night for the damaged man that she was trying to help in piecing him back together. It had almost been a relief when he had joined NYPD, a new found focus and a reason to go on. The relief had ended the first time that she had got 'the call' from the hospital and her Danny had been hurt. Yet she had ever doubted her marriage not once. She loved Danny with all of her heart and she could never imagine being with anybody else. Every time he got hurt, she felt the pain and every time he had a tough case she felt the stress- not because of anything she said or did- but simply because when he hurt, she hurt. What never ceased to amaze her was that Danny had no idea of why she felt so strongly for him. He was brave, kind, loving and tender- but yet didn't realise any of it. He had no idea what a great person he was- he was a considerate husband and a fantastic father and he never took his family for granted. That was why she loved him. She smiled to herself as she dished up the dinner, handing him his plate carefully and pouring herself a glass of wine to go with hers.

"This looks great babe" he commented gratefully as he picked up his knife and fork. She smiled in acceptance of the compliment. He took a bite, and then matched her gaze. "I love you" he told her softly, the intense look in his eyes proving yet again why she loved him so much.

The End

Just a little ditty, hope you like it!
