Clark Kent looked up from his computer and glanced around: the room was empty except for Lois Lane and himself. Everybody else had left the Daily Planet a bit earlier than usual, either to enjoy their St Valentine's day or to try and ignore it in the privacy of their home. Either way, here he was, answering some email while Lois was finishing the box of chocolates she had received earlier from a secret admirer.
"You're sure you don't want any, Smallville?"
"Yes I'm sure Lois," he replied for the hundredth time.
"Suit yourself then!"
Lois grinned at him and went on savouring her chocolates, distractingly proofreading one of his articles. Clark knew exactly what she was trying to do: make him jealous. She had spent all day bragging about how many Valentine cards she had received, and the box of chocolates had only made things worse. Well, maybe it was time he gave her his present.
Trying to look as nonchalant as possible, he fumbled about in his bag and retrieved an envelope.
"Here Lois, happy St Valentine's day."
"Awww Clark, you got me… a card. Well… that's sweet. At least you didn't forget."
"Open it before acting all disappointed." Clark smiled, amused.
"I'm not disappointed! Who said I was disappointed! A card is fine, a card is…" she paused, reading his note. She then jumped to her feet, her cheeks flushed with excitement.
"Oh my god Clark! It's… How did you…"
"How did I get this tip on the Anthony Gillis case? I have my sources too."
"And you didn't keep it to yourself?" she exclaimed, amazed.
"We're a team Lois, and I thought it'd be the best Valentine gift for you."
Lois shot him the brightest smile ever and, before he could even add something, she went round his desk and threw her arms around his neck.
"It's perfect! You're perfect! It's a thousand times better than any box of chocolates!"
She planted her lips on his and he revelled in the kiss, tasting the chocolate flavour that still lingered in her mouth. She detached herself a few minutes later and glanced at the clock behind him.
"I would love to continue this little make-out session, but thanks to your little tip, I have to be in Little Bohemia as soon as possible to tail Gillis."
She grabbed her coat and headed for the elevators, but she stopped when she noticed Clark wasn't following her.
"Clark, don't look so miserable! Do you really think I'd let you spend Valentine's Day alone? Plus I had prepared a little picnic for the two of us. We can still have a romantic and exciting dinner in my car."
It was Clark's turn to flash a bright grin and, as he put his jacket on and caught up with Lois, he thought of how she was perfect for him, and how she believed he was perfect for her. There was no reason to be jealous. They were perfect for each other.
