Okay, this isn't exactly a runescape story, but there's no "miner disturbance" catagory and that game was made by the same people who made runescape, so that's what catagory i'll put it in.

Anyway, this was for a story competition which I (unfortunatly) did not win, but i'll post it here because it's a story and it doesn't suck.

Enjoy.

The dense rock in the volcano breaks apart as the dwarf swings his pick at it, effortlessly clearing a path down deeper into the mine.

Moin was the dwarf's name, and Migli and Digli were his helpers on this expedition down the volcano.

"This is the best way to make money," Moin thinks to himself, "but it's so dangerous, no one is brave enough to do it." he sighs to himself as he smashes another rock, finds some iron in it, tosses it in his bag, and continues down further.

"What should we look out for, Moin?" Digli asks.

Moin answers "I'm concentrating on effluvium, Digli, because dwarven scientists will pay 300 gold per ounce of that stuff so they can study it."

Digli, obviously not big on rare gems, replies, "I see, but what is it exactly?"

Moin explains while pulling a chunk of silver out of a crack, "Effluvium is a bright green gem that generally has pockets of poisonous gas around it. That's why I brought these gas masks with me," holding one out for Digli to see.

"You mean like this?" Moin turns around to see Migli holding a green gem with gas around him.

"Exactly!" Moin exclaims while tossing him a gas mask. "We've found a vein of effluvium. Start digging here."

After a bit of collecting effluvium, part of the ground gives way to a small cave, almost taking Digli with it.

They peer in and see nothing at first, but then hear a low growl followed by two glowing red eyes staring right at them.

"Is that…. a myth?" Migli whispers to the others. Moin nods and aims his lantern at it, and they see something they did not expect. A hairy creature with claws wearing a mining helmet and shredded dwarven clothing, a pickaxe and unlit lantern strewn across the cave. Looking closer, they saw it resembled a dwarf!

"What is that?" Digli wondered. "Could that be what the effluvium gas does…?"

"I don't know, but I'm not staying around to find out," Moin said.

They decide to collapse the tunnel and warn others not to go in that direction unless armed with good weapons, and ask the scientists to test the effects of effluvium gas.

Moin didn't get quite as much gold as he was hoping for, but at least they know more about where myths came from.
