Romans and Seagulls.
The dog stinks, the sea's calm and there's no food. Well, there's that last seagull Ragetti killed in a fit of inspiration - or self preservation, as the birds had been quite interested in his wood eye at the time - but Pintel feels his stomach rebel at the idea of plucking feathers and eating the raw, callous meat. Considering the life he's lead, that's saying something.
"It's good," Ragetti grinns, then cleans his yellowed teeth with the butt of a feather, and Pintel thinks that maybe the promise of the gallows wasn't that bad. "Want some?"
"If I eat another seagull, I'll die," He makes a face at the offered chunk of meat, watching the blood drip slowly down the corner of Ragetti's lip.
It looks tempting, very, very tempting. And as soon as the thought is complete, Pintel begins to row harder, knowing the sun is making him go mad. Madder than usual at any rate. Madness is the only explenation as to why Ragetti looks quite, quite welcoming, sucking the last of meat out of the small bones.
"Ain't that bad," He's grinning at him, showing off his teeth and the blood in them, and Pintel is quite sure he's going to do something he'll regret if he doesn't stop this nonsense, "Romans ate all kind of birds, all the time. Seagulls too."
"We ain't Romans, though, are we?" Pintel barks back snidely, narrowing his eyes until Ragetti stops and picks up his tattered bible.
Better him playing with that, than tempting Pintel to damn his soul a thousand times worse than before. The waves pick up, the dog barks in excitement, and all is well in the world...
For now.
