Farewell
I turn from the cheering crowd and see only you
You
On the ground
Dying.
I cry out, the crowd quieting as they too spot where you lay
I run to you
You seem surprised to be there
Surprised to see the blood seeping out of the wound in your chest.
I gently pull you to me
Your head resting on my lap
As it had so many times before.
You grasp at me too
Meeting my gaze
Your green eyes still bright
As they had been the first time we met on the train
All those years ago.
You seem to know what is happening,
I see you accept it
And that breaks me
Because as you reach up,
Wiping tears from my face,
I can see that you know what is going to happen
And all you worry about is me.
How many times have you put me before you?
How many times you made sure I was ok far before doing so for yourself?
There have been too many times for me to even think of counting them.
And now it is happening again,
As your blood stains the stones,
Your life seeping away,
You tell me to live,
To keep going
Find people who make it worth breathing,
Do all the things I've dreamed of doing.
As if it were possible to do anything
Without you being there
Without your support
Your love.
Still I promise
For you
Always for you
I say words that I despise
For to mean them I must accept that you're leaving me here.
Still they leave my lips.
And as your eyes begin to dim,
And you whisper final words of love,
My lips meet yours for the last time,
Before the light in your eyes burns out.
Leaving me here
Alone.
The others gather around
Tears streaming freely.
None of them knew
What we meant to each other
Until now
Everyone knows
They finally know
And you aren't even here to see it.
The tale of the bookworm and the lost boy
Ends
So suddenly.
Yes we may have won the war
But our loss is far greater.
As your life ends
So does mine
And yet it simply begins anew
For I am a different person now
And I live my life
It hurts so much to live
But for you
I'll do anything.
So farewell
My love
My heart
My soul
Until we meet again
