She remembered certain things more clearly than the others.
Years later, all grown up and in her new life, she could remember. Many memories from her old life had faded to dreams; distant things she could still see in her mind. Something's she couldn't place, like when people in her dreams called her Ofelia. She understood that it had been her name, but it seemed so far away she knew she was no longer that girl. She was Princess Moanna, and she was happy.
She could remember however, her mortal mother. Even now, her heart sometimes ached at the remembrance of her death, of her last words to her.
"Magic doesn't exist! Not for you, for me, for anyone!"
She remembered lying curled together in their bed in their little flat in the city, listening to her heartbeat as she read to her. They had been so happy, even when her father died.
She remembered Mercedes, humming a lullaby as she held her close, comforting her when her mother had first fallen ill. She had told her everything would be all right, that everything would be fine.
But not all of her memories were pleasant.
She remembered when her mother had told her she was getting married, and she had been introduced to the Captain. Something had seemed off about him… like the way he loomed over her, even though she was rather small. He had been kind to her mother in the beginning, but it had changed after her mother had become pregnant. She remembered that she hated her mother for telling her to call the Captain her father. She knew in her heart that that cruel, heartless and bloodthirsty man would never ever be her father.
She remembered the pain when he had slapped her, calling her a little bitch. She had wanted to scream at him, to tell him who she really was, but she had been so afraid after she saw what he could do she had said nothing.
She remembered the feeling of her little brother cradled against her as she ran, hell-bent on protecting him from the Captain. She remembered the horror when Pan had told her she had to spill the blood of an innocent (her brother) to open the portal.
And strangely enough, she remembered when she had been shot. There had been a sound like thunder and a searing pain flowed through her. She moved her hand from her belly and saw blood. The world spun and she fell to the stone floor watching the bastard walk away carrying her brother leaving her to die.
Her most vivid dream though, was when Mercedes had come. She found her and cradled her head in her lap, stroking her hair and humming the lullaby Moanna still found herself humming when she was alone. She had gently slipped into death and had been reunited with what she had longed for.
But there were times, when she wandered among the underground city at night, wrapped in her cloak, tall and elegant, beautiful and graceful…
That she wished she remembered more.
