Jamie laid on the grass in the cemetery looking at the sky, it was 5:00 am so the clouds were scattered with hints of reds and purples that promised a beautiful day. Anyone who saw her would have assumed that she was just watching the sun rise, but he knew it was a different story.
Landon was watching her from some 5 feet away, and he knew when she was just laying there that he shouldn't disturb her. She had been thinking a lot lately and he was agitated that she wouldn't tell him what she was thinking about. He was going to find out today.
"Hey," he said casualty, "What's going on?"
"Not much," she said in a distant voice, almost like a whisper. One thing that he loved about her was when she spoke with a hopefulness that could make you believe that anything was possible. It seemed like that voice was fading away, like she lost her faith.
"What are you thinking about?" he was determines to get an actual answer out of her.
"Just thinking," she said vaguely.
"Jaime, please talk to me. I hate when you shut me out."
"Just coming to terms with reality."
"And that would be?"
"Landon, it's harder to explain than you realize," she said sitting up and looking at him. He went over and sat down behind her and she leaned back into his chest. He wrapped his arms around her and she took a deep breath.
"I'm finally ready to let go," she started wistfully. " I thought that if I just sit in my room and felt sorry for myself then it would be alright. But I know now that I couldn't do that. I couldn't do that to my father and I couldn't do that to you. So I've been thinking about life and what God's plan for me is and I think that I'm meant to go to heaven and help people who are there. I'm alright with dying Landon."
Landon could understand why she was alright with leaving, but what about him? Jamie saved his life, without her here, would he go back to his old ways? He wanted to be better for her, where would his inspiration and encouragement come from now?
"Landon, I can't bare to leave you and you know that I love you, but everyone has to die someday."
"But why now why do you have to leave now when I just found you? You have helped me so much and you have made me a better man, why does God have to take you away from me?" he started shouting and he had tears in his eyes.
"Landon, I don't know why I have to leave now, but you were always a good man, I just made you see it. You need to look at the people around you and realize that they also want you to be the best man you can be. Your mom is so proud that you have changed your life and so is my dad. Don't worry Landon, we will meet again, someday." she turned and gave him a quick kiss on the lips and turned back around.
At Jamie's funeral 3 months later
Landon was looking at the grave which had a bouquet of white roses on them. Landon had tears running down his cheeks and a small smile on his face. He read the inscription on the headstone for the forth time
"I witnessed my miracle- Landon Carter, I Love You." -Jamie Carter.
