Kyo does not cook often. He knows how to make some basic foods, but now that he has Tohru who is always so willing to do everything for him he doesn't need to cook any more. Sometimes, though, he feels guilty for making her do all the work. They've had words about it before; Kyo knows that his beautiful wife loves it, loves making things for him and keeping him happy, but he still feels that he should be giving something back.
On Tohru's birthday he turns off the alarm before it rings and goes downstairs to the kitchen by himself. He wants her to relax for once, and to be pampered. He is determined to get this right for her.
But when he reaches the kitchen, Tohru's domain, with its polished white cupboards and soft flowery curtains covering the windows, he is at a loss. He hasn't thought this through, and already he's having doubts. What if he uses some special ingredients that Tohru needs for dinner? She will be upset, although she'll do her best to hide it, he knows. Kyo opens the first cupboard and looks through the contents. Everything looks a lot more complicated than the onigiri he used to make back when he was a boy, before he'd ever seen the girl with the beautiful smile.
A box of eggs catches his eye; it's almost full, and so he guesses that if he takes a couple it won't be a tragedy. He rifles through more cupboards for a frying pan, and then to his dismay remembers Tohru mentioning that it had broken. How can you break a frying pan? he wonders, both amused and irritated; but he has this box of eggs now and he is determined to do something with them. In one draw he finds a small plastic tray with separate circular holders. He vaguely recognises it as a contraption you poach eggs in. Kazuma did them for him when he was little; it was one of the few things his adoptive father managed to get right, he remembers with a smile.
Kyo cracks open an egg on the edge of a cup and pours it into the holder, careful not to add any of the shell. Placing it in the microwave he switches the timer on for a couple of minutes and goes back upstairs to check on Tohru. She's still sleeping like an angel and as he looks at her he feels so incredibly lucky that she's his; that they found each other in the end. He knows he doesn't deserve her, and he knows that she is certain that he does. Well, whether or not he deserves her, he knows he couldn't live without her. He just doesn't make sense without her.
Back in the kitchen the timer pings and he is horrified to discover the inside of the microwave covered with yellow and white pieces of egg. As he stares at it wondering how to explain the mess, how to clean it up, he is interrupted by a soft noise behind him.
"You woke me," Tohru murmurs, standing in the doorway. "What time is - Oh, Kyo." She smiles at him in such an incredibly soft way.
"I wanted to do something for you," he tells her, feeling terrible. Even Kazuma managed to do this!
Tohru smooths his hair with one hand and kisses him gently. "Thank you," she says, looking into his eyes. "Thank you." And just like that he feels forgiven.
AN: The prompt for this fic was the last thing you ate. I managed to explode an egg in the microwave, although I didn't set the timer for too long like Kyo did :)
Concrit very much appreciated!
