ALL ROADS LEAD TO JANE

Nyota was seated on their couch, legs tucked under her as she read. She smiled and sighed as she thumbed through familiar passages of one of her favorite books, "Pride and Prejudice" by her most beloved author, Jane Austen. Spock raised his eyes from his PADD and observed his K'diwa. Her facial expression was easily read even from across the room.

His logic and reasoning was so diametrically opposed to such writings. The pervading attitude of the powers that be-the rich-toward those in the inescapable lower class he found disturbing, In addition, the vanity, gluttony and gossipy cliques did not speak well of that period in human history and certainly was a waste of resources, time and possible mental development. One thing he could say in the book's favor was that the heroine did rise above the other character, she displayed wit, vivacity and superior intelligence. As he felt the joy radiating through their bond he knew that he could never deny her this pleasure. Nyota, sensing his critique looked up, smiled and then stuck out her tongue and returned to her book. Spock realizing reprimand would be futile, continued with his own reading.

She was now reading about the grand ball held at Neatherfield. She imagined beautiful decorations, the attendees finery, the music, the opulence…then she noted the similarity to the embassy balls she had attended. The servant class properly attired to indicate their position within the Vulcan delegation. With Nyota's comparison, Spock's head shot up and he viewed the triumphant look on his wife's face.

Her next search in the book observed the boredom displayed by the youth indicative of the waste involved by society's not tapping into such a rich resource. The problems that ensued were all due to their unchallenged and non-channeled mental capabilities and she thought of Tybok*-now Spock's right eyebrow was raised. Looking at her husband Nyota aimed her imaginary weapon at him and fired.

The over-critical, prejudicial attitude of Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine DeBourgh she saw mirrored in the Vulcans' guarded and closed society. Without the stupidity, of course. Spock continued to stare.

Now that she was sure she had his attention, she slowly and deliberately closed her book, walked seductively over to where her husband sat. As she reached him she gently removed his PADD from his hand and shimmied into his lap.

"Elizabeth and Darcy appeared to be so different from one another."

With that statement she ran her finger over the tips of his ears and across his eyebrows.

"But, in actuality they completed one another. Just as we do for we are half of each other's heart and half of each other's soul."

Spock, anticipating further evidence of her affection simply looked her in the eyes and said as he picked her up, "K'diwa, how could I have ever doubted your excellent taste in literature?"
