A/N This is one of quite a few MWPP fics I've written. The others aren't ready to be loaded here, this one might not be either. It's different than what I normally write and rather short. Enjoy.
Patch of Grass
I smiled as the sunlight warmed my face. This was how it should be, nestled in the grass between my two best friends with the afternoon sun shining down on us. Life should always be this wonderful.
"Peter's late." James observed quietly.
"You're surprised by this?" Sirius asked, chuckling.
"Not particularly, but it is becoming a bother."
"Should I say something to him?" There was a cruelly hopeful sound to Sirius' voice.
"No." I finally said, "If anyone says anything, I will."
"Why you?" James rolled onto his side and gave me an indignant look.
"Well, it's not as if he's actually done something wrong."
"Stood up his three best friends, that's all." Sirius grumbled, waving a bug from his face.
"He's probably studying for his NEWTs, which is actually what the three of us should be doing."
"Is that all you think about?" James groaned.
"No."
They both went silent, as though waiting for me to continue.
"Well!" Sirius demanded, elbowing me roughly.
"Well, what?"
"Well, if you don't just think of books and studying, what do you think about?"
I smiled knowingly and continued to look at the expanse of blue sky that stretched on above the school, "Things."
"Hello, boys." A new voice cut in, followed by a face appearing directly above us.
"Lily." Sirius greeted with a grin.
"Hello, Darling." James reached a hand back and squeezed her ankle lovingly.
I merely nodded, admiring the sun catching in her auburn hair.
"Where's Peter?" She queried, looking around.
"Off somewhere." James replied, his hand venturing higher.
"What are you doing so far from home little girl?" Sirius asked, still grinning, somehow managing to show every tooth in his head.
Lily rolled her eyes and dislodged James' hand with a swift shake, "Enjoying the weather."
"It is quite lovely today." I managed, catching her eye.
She smiled, "Yes, nearly perfect."
Something in her voice caught my attention, a hint of sadness or maybe longing.
"Have I told you how beautiful you are?" James interrupted my thoughts.
She smiled at him, a genuine sort of smile, "Not today."
"With an attitude like that, I'm surprised she hasn't left you." Sirius put in, "For me."
"Honestly…" Lily began.
James was on his feet before another word was spoken, "If you'll excuse us, I have to go…" He waved his hand vaguely, making Lily giggle. As they walked away she turned and looked back, catching my eye. The hint of sadness returned, but only for a moment.
Suddenly a panting Peter was kneeling beside me on the grass, "Sorry… I'm late… was studying…"
"It's alright, have a patch of grass." I offered.
"Took you long enough." Sirius muttered.
"I was…" Peter started.
"Don't worry about it." I sighed and laid back on the grass again.
Though, I spent the rest of the afternoon just like that, nestled between two of my best friends, somehow the sun didn't shine quite as brightly as it had.
