Behind These Hazel Eyes

Holly kept her face stony. They had spent the last year of their life together, rebuilding everything after the Opal Koboi incident. Holly had spent too much time on the surface, that's what he told her, she had spent too much time with another guy. She argued that she had been helping Artemis get his mind back together and recover his lost memories. He asked why helping the Mud Boy was so important to her. He told her that he needed to be the most important man in her life.

She protested that he was, her voice never raising at any point during the argument; they never argued at the office, instead keeping their relationship at home in his apartment. At first, moving in with him had been exciting, but after a few months, they began arguing. Holly had been working closely with Foaly on recovering Artemis's lost memories, and they had been very successful. The tension between the couple rose when she had told him Artemis remembered everything that had happened during the trip back in time—and that when Artemis remembered, he had kissed her. He got mad then, and yelled at Holly until she left the apartment. It wasn't until she had gotten back to her own that she let her tears fall.

Finally the arguments got to the point that Holly moved out altogether, and, with them living separately, their arguments had moved to the office. His face would turn that beet red he had adopted from Julius and he would scream at her behind the soundproof walls of his office. She never let him see her cry. Even with the stress of her life and job, she never let him see how much the arguments had upset her.

Until today. Today, their argument got particularly heated. He said awful things to her, and Holly responded in kind. Finally, when he told her that she just needed to not see him anymore. For the first time, she had to truly struggle to keep the tears back as she replied, "D'arvit, Trouble, I love you!"

His face turned an even deeper shade of red. "If you really loved me, Holly, you would fight harder!"

"I'm doing everything I can," Holly assured him, her voice rising. "There's only so much I can do when everything I do during the day is under suspicion."

"You have a past with the Mud Boy," Trouble reminded her. "It's not my fault I can't trust anything you do around him."

Tears threatened to spill over as her anger rose. "So what if you don't trust Artemis? You can at least trust me!"

"I'm sorry, Holly. We're done." Trouble sat back at his desk and began filing paperwork, a clear dismissal.

Holly stormed out of the office and back to her own. As soon as the door was locked, Holly sank to the ground and sobbed. She had decided long ago that no matter what happened Trouble would never get the satisfaction of seeing her cry.

Thanks for reading! I came up with this on a long car ride, and I was kinda bored listening to Pandora. Many thanks to my beta Jennifer Scott. If any of you like Young Justice, I recommend checking out her work!
