Disclaimer: This agnsty, dramtic scinerio never did happen, yet the characters all belong to someone. Who knew that someone wasn't me, but JK Rowling?

This is my first challenge written for the Stupid Cupid Unusual Pairings challenge. Please r&r!

Warnings: AU and unrequited Bellatrix/Lily! This is obviously AU as Bellatrix is only one year older here, not nine years older, and deffinately OOC.

The Sorting Hat had never been wrong. Not once. However Bellatrix Lestrange was sure that it mustve been- after being sorted into Slytherin. She wasn't anything like her parents, and she didn't care much for their money and power fication. But soon she'd know a fication of a different kind...a redhaired kind. At the time, she had shrugged it off and walked to her new table with a trademark Black smirk, giving them the show they wanted. She had truly considered herself being a Ravenclaw, yet apparently the hat was never wrong.

Bellatrix and Lily had been at Hogwart at the same time, but the pretty redhaired girl had been in Gryffindor and a year her junior. Their contact had been quite limited, until Bella got close to a greasy haired boy named Severus Snape. Then, Bellatrix finally got to learn what made the younger girl tick. She was passionate, yet was patient with the younger students. She actually seemed to enjoy putting down the Potter heir, and she often would hex the boy when he would constantly ask her to Hogsmead. Bellatrix couldn't understand why she was nervous that the girl might one day say yes.

The girls hexed and bantered and argued andd talked, always friends yet always enimes. Slowly, but surely, Bellatrix felt herself wanting something more.

October 31st 1981

Bellatrix looked like she was about to run away, but after a quick glance at Lily's unmoving face, she instead dried her tears with shaking, callused thumbs. Her hands caressed the face which once was so full of joy and life, and she did her best to stop her tears. After a quick pained look crossed Bellatrix's face, she stooped low and brushed the cold lips with a gentle yet passionate kiss.

"Goodbye, Lily."

As she walked through the remains of the Potter house, her light footsteps seemed to echo in the eerie silence. It was omnious, considering the house was probably never like that. She walked, knowing that the silence was almost loud, almost deafening yet entirely her fault. And it was going to stay that way; no one was there to ruin her silence or tell her otherwise. It would've been a lie. She was alone. Which she was grateful for; she felt more comfortable alone. There was no one able to see her at her moments of weakness or discover the truth. The house was filled with tempting shadow, cast by light from anywhere but there. It could never be light without Lily. Festering lies filled her mind, telling her there was something she could've done to prevent the heartbreak. In truth she had not been the one to give up the Potters, but getting Pettigrew involved with the Death Eaters had been her idea.

She had almost cried with relief the day she heard that Lily had accepted Jame's offer for a butterbeer- she could finally breathe. It would all be over. Bellatrix could let her go, knowing she'd be happy and had someone to potect her. Bellatrix didn't trust James, but she knew he would never do anything to hurt her. But no- she should have known better, known that seeing Lily's lifeless body fallen on the floor would provide no release for her. No closure or comfort, only the cold and silence.

She finally broke down, a mix of tears and rage, screaming into the silence. Her voice, her animalistic screams, were the only sounds coming back to her. If the Dark Lord wasn't already dead, she would've done the deed herself.

There was nothing truly extrodinary about Lily, but that was wrong wasn't it? Because there must've been something amazing about her to have two of the Dark Lord's (previously) most loyal servants fall in love. It was the only time she ever used that word, when refering to Lily. She knew she shouldn't have acknowledged it, shouldn't have harboured it to begin with- for there was no love for a Black (if Sirius' relationship with that werewolf Lupin was anything to go by). But maybe she and her cousin were more alike than either would like to admit, because it seemed that they both found it easy to ignore the blood status and become utterly infaturated with someone like that. Lily's inferior, dirty blood left Bellatrix's mind instantly when she apparated to Godrics Hollow to see if the rumors were true. It was wrong on many different levels, the borderline obsession reaching quite an unhealthy state. But Lily's blood was not pure, and the hat was never wrong about what house Bellatrix should've been in. The hate and House rivalary somehow faded and something grew from it- love. Bellatrix wasn't pure like Narcissa, but would marry a man she didn't love to cherise auburn locks from afar. Did that make her smart or foolish? She could never be like Sirius, and publize how much the Black insanity must have affected her- after all, that's the only way she could love someone as impure as Lily Evans, was it not? To care so much for someone so taken?

But Lily wasn't impure, not really. She was pure wrong and pure right and sweet Merlin if Bellatrix could go back she would've and kissed the girl hard and sensless, and proved just how much she cared for Lily. But that had been Valentine's day so many years ago when he had asked. It was the Valentine's that was the most horrible- that one year when she wasn't there to protect Lily from the likes of Potter and his gang- that she finally said yes. Bellatrix got a letter telling her all about how much he had changed, and the older women sat there stunned- changed? Did she really consider that changed? Oh but Lily, she thought, I changed for you. I changed everything that I had ever been told, and made an exception. Lily was the exception.

Purebloods were better than Mudbloods- but Lily (the only one she refered to as Muggleborn and not a Mudblood) was so much better. Purebloods preached purity- but what was more pure than Lily Evans? Bellatrix became a Death Eater not for love of it or fear or power or money- but for Lily. She tried to postpone the inevitable, but the prophecy made Lily an even larger target.

A few days later at a Death Eater's house...

"What

do you know?!" Bellatrix screamed at the couple who lay practicly imobile on the ground, save for the whimpers and twitches.

"Crucio! Crucio! Crucio!" She shrieked firing the spell again and again, trying to find any information she could from them. Bellatrix wanted something different than the other Death Eaters- she wanted to kill Voldemort when she found him. Rodolphus, Rabastan, and Barty Crouch Jr. watched her fury with glee, wondering what had brought out this uncontrolable side to her. Even after the Longbottoms were driven insane, she continued screaming and cursing them, being unable to leave without a lead on his whereabouts. The other Death Eaters had never seen Bellatix this devoted to something, and soon people where mistaking this anger and devotion to finding him, devotion for him.

February 13th 1982

As she sat in her cell in Azkaban, her trial being held later that day,she realized that she had only ever been to Lily's grave once. Everyone had long since left after the funeral, leaving her to tell Lilly how she truly felt. Bellatrix had sat next to the grave, hood up, speaking to it for hours and only when her dark mark burned, telling her it was time for a mission did she leave. Bellatrix had kissed the headstone farewell before wrecking havoc on the minds of Alice and Frank Longbottom.

'What would you have said, my dear, had I asked you and not Potter? Could you have saved me? Could I have saved you?' The raven haired women thought to herself. As the moon apeared from behind a cloud, Bellatrix sighed through the small window in her cell.

"Happy Valentine's, my love." She whispered.

"Bellatrix Lestrange! Your trial is about to begin!"

A/N: There we go- a lovely angsty belated Valentine's fic for the Stupid Cupid challenge. My first time with this pairing, so please let me know if you like it!
