Sam had believed in angels since he was young. Even when Dean and John told him there was no such thing, he still believed.

Between the perfect world and the bottom line

Keeping love alive in these troubled times

It's a miracle in itself

And we know too well what that's about

Still we made it through

Only God knows how

We must've had a little help

Sam remembered times when he was little, John almost to his breaking point putting up with Sam and Dean fighting. Sam would just be about to hit Dean when a calm would settle over them and things would be okay again for a while.

It must have been wild angels

Wild angels

Watching over you and me

Wild angels, wild angels

Baby what else could it be

When they were really young, and sometimes when they were older, Sam and Dean had to share a motel bed. Even when they were mad at each other, Sam always felt a bit better after thinking about all the scary things in the world that his dad thought he was keeping from him when he could snuggle into his big brother's arms when it was time to sleep. Dean would never admit it, but it comforted him too.

Well it must've been hard, it must've been tough

Keeping up with crazy fools like us

'Cause it's so easy to fall apart

And we still break each other's hearts sometimes

Spent some nights on the jagged side

Somehow we wake up in each other's arms

Sam took most opportunities to tease Dean about Castiel's lack of spacial boundaries and apparent man-crush on Dean. However, he never told his brother about the nights he woke up to see the angel standing guard near Dean's bed.

There are some nights

I watch you while you dream

I swear I hear the sound of beating wings

As Sam slipped into the separate motel room he had booked to give Dean and Castiel some privacy after their return from Purgatory, he smiled at the angel who was already in his bed.

Gabriel was holding a licorice whip in one hand and a new book by one of Sam's favorite authors in the other. He set the book on Sam's pillow and patted his side of the bed.

Once Sam was naked in bed with his book in hand and his angel's head resting on his chest he decided he would wait to tell everyone Gabriel was back.

It must've been wild angels

Wild angels

Watching over you and me

Wild angels, wild angels

Baby what else could it be
