Prologue
Freddie's view
It hardly felt like a week since Melanie's funeral, but it indeed had been.
Melanie was in a fatal car accident while she was away at boarding school. A drunk driver ran a red light and smashed right into the passengers side, which she occupied, killing her instantly. She was so badly damaged that the funeral had to be closed-casket.
I didn't know her well. Heck, I didn't even believe she existed until recently, almost around the time she died. I felt bad that I didn't believe in her sooner and had gotten to know her. Maybe if I had, things would have turned out differently.
Moreover though, I felt bad for Sam.
Being an only-child, I couldn't even begin to imagine how it felt to lose a sibling in such a horrific way. Sam made it seem like she didn't like Melanie, but she had to have loved her...
Carly and I returned to school the weekend after the funeral, but Sam was understandably absent. In fact, Principal Franklin had personally excused her for however long she needed (Sam was one of his favorite students, regardless of her troublesome ways). It was Friday, yet she still hadn't come back. We hadn't heard from her since Sunday either. She wasn't answering our calls or texts, but Carly and I figured she just needed to be to herself for a while, which was understandable. We just hoped she would open up to us soon.
"Hey Freddie." Carly sighed as she came up to my locker
"Hey." I mumbled
"Still haven't heard from Sam?"
"Well, I thought you'd hear from her before me."
"Maybe..."
Carly was depressed the whole week long, not only because of Melanie's death, but also because she couldn't make Sam feel better. It really bothers Carly when there's a problem that she can't fix, and right now that problem is Sam.
No, I shouldn't say that. Sam isn't a problem. She's a girl who lost her sister and is grieving.
"...You think we should go see her?" Carly asked
"I don't know...I think she'll come back to us when she's ready. We shouldn't push her."
"But..."
"Sam's the toughest girl I know. She'll bounce back, just watch."
"...You're right. She will."
"Yeah. She'll be back making my life hell and eating you out of house and home before we know it."
This elicited a giggle from Carly, something I hadn't heard in over a week.
"I hope so...Wanna go for smoothies after?"
"Sure."
"Your treat."
"Of course." I sighed
"What's that? You're my boyfriend, you're supposed to buy me stuff." Carly said matter-of-factly
"Whatever happened to the equality movement? You should want to treat me every now and then." I teased
"Nah. I'm happy with tradition."
I chuckled as we left my locker. We were both on our way to the gallows (Mrs. Briggs' class), when suddenly I heard someone running up from behind.
"Hey guys!" a familiar voice shouted
I spun around on my heel, and I couldn't believe what I saw.
It was Sam, but she didn't look like Sam.
She looked like Melanie...
