Rite

The end of the month has come again.

It is a Sunday and the sky above them is blue with dapples of white here and there. The navigator relaxes as she breathes in the piquant smell of the ocean, calmed by its distinct saltiness and sempiternal possibilities. It is bright with no signs of a storm. Perfect weather, she knows.

So here out in the deck, she sets to accomplish her task.

Her captain is right in front of her, perched on a wooden stool, legs crossed and hands tucked in them. His straw hat sits atop her orange head (it is one of the rare times she gets to have the chance) as she carefully takes a lock of his hair between her fingers and snips it with a scissor. His scent faintly washes over her and he smells of the sea and sweat and of something that could only be Luffy. She lets her fingers thread between the silky midnight strands, secretly reveling in their softness. Then she snips. And snips some more.

All the while the captain stares ahead, his eyes taking in the endless blue of the ocean and he hums a tune-one of Brook's happy melodies.

They are not bickering as they usually do. Instead she stays quiet, content to hear his hum as the gentle waves beneath the ship slaps on the wood.

It takes a few more snips before she is done. She takes one step back. Her captain jumps down from his seat enthusiastically and turns to her, a big, big grin on his tanned face.

"Thanks Nami."

And then he is off, shouting for meat from their cook.

Nami shakes her head though there is a hint of a smile on her face. How she became the one to cut his hair is lost on her. But she thinks she quite likes it-though she'd never admit this to anyone. Fingering the straw material that is still on her head, she heads back inside her room. Her maps are just halfway done after all.

She waits for the next end of the month to come.
