The view screen cleared for a moment to allow Khan to see the Enterprise fire her phasers. More conduits and framework of the Reliant fell atop of Khan; the hot metal melting half of his face and left arm. After much time of struggling, Khan removed the beam that had lain atop of him. Blood seeped from his arm and into the carpet of the bridge floor. He tried to move the injured arm, but aggravating pain shot through it. The amount of pain coming from the arm told him that the bones had been shattered.
"Commander Reliant, this is Enterprise. Surrender and prepare to be boarded," a voice said over the communications relay.
Khan struggled to bring himself up to a half standing position, and blocked out the repeated orders of surrender. He looked at the view screen to see the Enterprise looming over him in apparent victory. Kirk thought he had won, hence the repeated hails for his surrender. Khan knew that he was going to die now thanks to Kirk, but he did not want Kirk to have the final move. He still had one more weapon to use. "No, Kirk. The game is not over."
He crawled over to the activation device for the Genesis torpedo, and strained himself as he put each cylinder into place. "To the last, we grappled with thee," Khan said as he positioned the last cylinder. The last one clicked into place, and the final countdown began.
"If I must die," Khan announced, "I will take you with me, Kirk, my old friend."
The time on the Genesis device continued to wind down as Khan brought himself back over to the navigation station. He wanted to be able to see the Enterprise try and escape his wrath. As he predicted, the Enterprise slowly turned and tried to get out of range.
Khan started to feel himself fade, but he fought to stay alive to see his revenge completed. Less than two minutes remained until both he and Kirk would be killed.
He let out a soft laugh. "No, no you can't get away! From Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at theeā¦"
A smile crept across Khan's lips as he uttered what he thought would be his final words. Thirty seconds remained. Soon, Khan didn't have enough strength to support him, and slowly lowered himself towards the ground.
However, he didn't reach the ground before something on the view screen caught his eye. The Enterprise streaked across the screen, and was soon out of the Genesis torpedo's grasp of death.
His eyes widened and his jaw dropped in shock. Kirk had once again foiled the superior intellect. "No!" Khan tried to yell, but it came out as a mere whisper. He wanted to curse Kirk's name, but he felt an explosion beneath his feet before he could say anything. Almost immediately after he felt the explosion, he was met with a ball of white flame as darkness surrounded him.
