Chapter 1

Korra

I just want to make one thing clear. The decisions I made in this story made sense to me at the time. They might not have been all right, but they were decisions I needed to make. When I look back at myself now, it's easy to pinpoint the precise moment my world changed.

It was just after 8:00 in the morning and Mako had just recently left for his first day of work at the station with Lin. I was still in bed trying to surpress the need to throw up again and, although morning sickness wasn't anything new to me, my breasts began to ache. It felt as though my wrappings had a stranglehold on my chest. I throw the sheets off my sweat clad body and sprint for the bathroom just in time to reach the toilet.

Great. It was the third time that morning that I hadn't been able to keep any remaining food in my stomach from making its reappearance. I decide that a drink would help settle my upset stomach.

Walking out of the bathroom connected to my bedroom, I see Mako's clothes strewn all over the floor beside our bed. He was so afraid of being late, he hadn't even thought of cleaning up before he left. I pick up his clothing and throw them into the basket next to our bathroom door.

Our flat wasn't big. In fact, it was actually too small. Our home consisted of a comically small kitchen (if you could call it a kitchen) which contained a counter, in front of that, a stove and next to it, our fridge. There were a few cabinets that held the cups and plates above the stove, but other than that it was empty. The living room was where Mako spent most of his time with Bolin. It held an old, worn out, leather couch and Mako's old radio. There was a hallway which led to the bedrooms. On the right was Bolin's room which was almost identical to their room besides the fact it faced the other side of Republic City. Then on the left, was our bedroom. I actually enjoyed spending most of my time in our bedroom because of the view from our grand window. Mako said it reminded him of his old home with Bolin above the arena. We had a amazing view of Air Temple Island and since our flat was right next to the shore, I tended to jump out the window and swim to the temple to visit Meelo, Ikki, and Jinora.

I'm brought out of my thoughts when I trip over my fur pelt.

"Shit," I mumble, hopping over it and walking into the kitchen.

I see a plate of pancakes set on the counter and a note beside it. I instantly read the letter knowing it can only be from him.

Korra,

Sorry I left in such a rush this morning, I know you're not feeling well. But it's my first day and I don't want to be reconigzed as a "rookie" for too long. I made you breakfast and hopefully you'll be awake when I come home to talk later.

Love,

Mako

His handwriting, sloppy as always, sent me through a wave of emotions and I begin to cry. Confused as to why I was even crying over a note, I look over to the pancakes and notice they were shaped in the form of a heart. Mako was always such a romantic and it was something I had come to truly love about him.

I grab a pancake with my hand (because I'm too lazy to find a fork) and bring it to my mouth. I expect the smell of vanilla to waft into my nose, but what I didn't expect was a sour odor to come from the pancake.

Gagging, I drop it back onto the plate and nearly run back into the bathroom, until the smell leaves my senses.

Walking back into the kitchen, I push away my breakfast and move to go sit on the couch. On my way, the front door opens practically hitting me in the face. Bolin bolts in and I push him back a few steps and he tumbles over.

"You're awake," he says nonchalantly, standing up. "Mako told me you weren't feeling well, he told me to bring you some medicine."

He dusts off his pants runs a hand through his hair. "Are you feeling any better?"

Immediately I think of the foul smell and my inability to keep any food in my stomach. Turning away from him, I reply, "I've been worse."

Bolin walks with me into the living room and he quickly claims his side of the couch. He turns to face me. "Yeah, but how are you feeling now?"

"Not too good." I laugh. "I've been throwing up and even though those pancakes Mako made me look really good, I can't eat them. They smell like rotten eggs." I scrunch up my nose in distaste and he chuckles.

"They can't be that bad. We all know Mako is a good cook." He stands from his place on the couch and walks over to the plate of food.

"I know he's a good cook, but I couldn't even taste the pancakes without gagging."

He takes a sniff of them and moans. "How can you say they smell bad? Can I eat them?"

I shrug. "Sure, I don't mind."

He engulfs the whole plate in less then two minutes. "I want more."

Rolling my eyes, I reply, "Well you'll have to wait until tomorrow morning because I think Mako's coming home late."

He sighs. "Looks like it's just gonna be me and you all day."

"Well I'm sick so you'll just have to have fun by yourself."

"Are you sure you're not just pregnant?" He laughs so hard but I'm barely listening because I hadn't even thought of that idea.

I guess I take too long to give him an answer because when I stay frozen trying to count the days since my last menstrual cycle, he jumps from his seat, nearly knocking over the chair.

"You are pregnant!" I try to disagree but he interrupts me before I can. "C'mon just think about it! All the symptoms are there! Morning sickness, food that would normally smell amazing to you, smells horrible and well shouldn't your back or breasts hurt too?"

My thoughts lead back to earlier this morning when my breasts felt incredibly sore. "Bolin we can't just assume anything. Besides Mako and I are still too young to have kids. So I'm just gonna go with the idea that this is some sort of stomach flu." I didn't even believe my own statement, but I didn't want to frighten myself with the idea this might actually be happening.

Thankfully he agrees. "Ok, yeah, sure, it might not be the reason you're feeling this, but it wouldn't hurt to make sure, right? I'll just go get you a pregnancy test now. No one needs to know except you and me."

I contemplate his plan and give in. "Ok but what are people going to think about you buying a pregnancy test? Won't that seem suspicious?"

"Korra, with all the girls I've been with, I don't think people will be surprised seeing me buying a pregnancy test."

"That's kind of sad."

He shrugs and makes a popping sound with his mouth. "I don't really care."

Secretly I wonder if his reputation bugs him at all. But I decide to drop the subject. "Ok well just come back soon please?"

"I'll be home as soon as I can Korra."

He leaves and any hope I had left with him.
