A/N: This is a simulated lightsaber battle between Valin Horn and another Jedi apprentice. This takes place 10 years after the New Jedi Order.
The instructor looked at them with glaring eyes. "Begin!"
Valin and his opponent Syk ignited their lightsabers. Syk made a lunge, but Valin parried it and swung his lightsaber around to strike Syk in the side. Syk jumped to the side and held his lightsaber in an en guarde position.
Valin shuffled forward, but kept his distance. He touched his blade to Syk's lightly, testingly. Then he swung for Syk's legs. Syk jumped back, swinging his blade low.
Now Syk attacked. He came at Valin with a vengeance. He charged with his lightsaber held straight at his adversary. Valin batted it aside, but Syk anticipated this. He swung pulled his blade back and swung it about in an arc that would have sliced Valin in two. However, Valin did a flip in the air, landing five feet away.
Valin charged, holding his lightsaber next to his ear. At the last moment he rolled on the floor and struck at Syk. Syk was unable to block the blow.
Valin's strike would have decimated Syk, but the lightsabers were training sabers, and could not kill. Valin's lightsaber deactivated, leaving an exhausted Valin Horn on the floor.
Syk offered his friend his hand. "Good job," he said. "Next time I'll win."
"Go ahead and try," Valin replied, accepting the lift.
"Good!" the instructor cried. "Adaptation, speed, agility, and humility."
Valin and Syk smiled at each other.
