Chapter one
Many centuries ago a peaceful land was ruled by a kind and just king named aknamkanon. This peace and harmony was seen as weakness by a race of people known as the oricalcos, named after the stone that gave them the magic they wield. The oricalcos people declared war and invaded with armies of ruthless warriors who killed any living thing in their path. Aknamkanon sent out his own army to defend his people long enough for him to devise a plan. Letters were sent to his allies for aid in the war, this multiplied his forces and the Oricalcos army was delayed, but not yet defeated.
The king's knight Seto was loyal to his lord and excepted the mission without hesitation, Prince Atemu wanted to join the quest as well. Aknamkanon did not want to send his son on a mission that might get him killed, but it would be selfish of him to hide his child away while other parents were forced to watch their own fight in the war. With a heavy heart he allowed Atemu to join Seto along with an ex-thief turned spy by the name of Bakura.
The king gave his son a map with a destination circled "I fear I can not give you to much information at present, word has reached my ear of spies among us." He said grimly. "You will have to find your own way and meet with a soldier who's name I have written on that map, he has fought the enemy and seen first hand what they can do. I hope that will help you avoid them should they reach this far."
The three stayed at the palace for three days in order to prepare supplies and come up with a plan to reach their first destination. They had told the King that the journey would start at sunrise. However in secret they left in the dead of night wearing dark cloaks, if the rumors of a spy were true then this would give them a head start. None of them spoke until they stopped to rest when the sun was high overhead.
"How far have we gone?" asked Bakura as he took a drink of water. Atemu pulled the map out of his pack and studied it for a few moments.
"I'd say at least fifteen miles, its not much of a head start but the confusion should help us at least a little" Atemu's red eyes remained on the map as he spoke, determining the best course to take. The options open to them were to go east and stay under tree cover and arriving in three days, or they could continue north. which would take half the time but eventually the trees would thin out and leave them exposed. He laid the map out on the ground and showed them their options.
"The war is still far from us and we've only recently suspected spies so North shouldn't be to dangerous yet" Bakura said.
"Yeah but we cant be sure that the enemy is completely in the dark" Seto pointed out after a few moments. "If we were to assume that they at least have a faint idea of what we're doing then they would take precautions. While our armies are fighting the big dogs, we wouldn't notice a few ants sneak past our defense."
Atemu rolled up the map and put it back in his pack. "Seto make a valid point, we should travel with the assumption that the Oricalcos army knows we are up to something. Caution is more important then speed at the moment"
Once all three were rested and nourished they turned east and continued to the rendezvous with their guide.
