"Thank you, lord Hokage, I will arrange your meeting with the council right away" Shizune said as she bowed and left the room. No sooner was she gone when there was another knock on the door. The Hokage sighed "Enter" he called, taking a sip of the warm tea Hinata had brought him. The door opened and Anko stepped in. "Good evening, lord Hokage" she said. "Our scouts have reported rogue ninja from the rice patty country crossing the fire country's border." "Watch them. If they appear to be a threat, bring them here to be interrogated." The Hokage replied. "Thank you, sir" Anko said and then was gone. Sasuke sighed and drank the rest of his tea. "Why?" he asked for the hundredth time, glaring pointedly at the picture of Naruto that was hanging on the wall. "Why me Dobe?" He stood up, turned and stared out the window past the village to the far horizon where the sun was setting. "I never wanted to be Hokage" He said placing his hands ion the windowsill. As he stood there, watching the sunset, his thoughts wandered back to that fateful mission.
"Naruto!!" Sasuke heard Sakura shriek over the roar of the rain. Sasuke whirled in time to see Naruto thrown back over the edge of the cliff, limp and bleeding. "NARUTO!!" Sasuke yelled, diving off the edge of the cliff and catching Naruto in his arms. As they fell, Sasuke shook Naruto "Naruto! Wake up Dobe!" he yelled. But Naruto was out cold. Desperate, Sasuke reached out and managed to grab the slippery edge of the jutting cliff, crying out as he felt his shoulder dislocate under the sudden weight. Gritting his teeth he hauled himself up onto the ledge and pulled Naruto up beside him.
"Naruto!" he yelled again, ignoring the pain in his shoulder "Dobe! Wake up!!" Naruto's eyes fluttered open "Sasuke?" he murmured. "T-take care of the village for me" Sasuke grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him with one hand. "No Naruto. Do it yourself." He said. "You're not going to die. You have a dream. You have a purpose to fill." Naruto smiled "I…Filled my purpose…" he whispered. "W-what do you mean?" Sasuke asked, fear knotting up in his stomach "You…you came back to Konoha" Naruto answered. "Naruto…" Sasuke began, his voice wavered as realization hit him full in the face. "Sasuke…you told me to never let my dreams-die." Naruto continued "How could I become Hokage if I couldn't save…my friend?" He closed his eyes and leaned back, his breathing becoming ragged. Sasuke shock his head, stubbornly refusing to accept reality. "Naruto, you always said never give up. If you die, you're running away from your dream!" he cried. Naruto's eyes opened once more and he smiled again. "No Sasuke, you're wrong…I'm not running – away and I'm not giving up. I'm done…my time is gone…Please…please take care of the village for me." Slowly his eyes closed and he sagged in Sasuke's arms. "Take care…" he whispered, then was gone.
Sasuke looked at the last rays of sunlight that was streaming across the village. "Alright…Naruto" he whispered, tears running down his cheeks. "Because your dream…must be fulfilled"
