Apologize

You hold me on your rope, got me ten feet off the ground

Bella sat at her desk, staring blankly out at the dreary sky. The pen in her hand was still, like a statue in some strange museum. She had loved him so much, more than life itself…and now he's gone.

I'm hearing what you say but I just can't make a sound

His words echoed in her head, much too clearly…if only she could forget everything, forget the love she felt, forget how her heart was ripped into shreds by those few and carefully chosen words.

You tell me that you need me, then you go and cut me down

The pen moved, writing five words onto the blank paper: I thought you loved me. And she thought that he did.

You tell me that you're sorry, didn't think I'd turn around, and say…

What if he came back? There was always that hope…but he wasn't the type. Once he made a promise, once his mind was set, there was no turning back. Not even Carlisle could change his opinion.

It's too late to apologize.

What would she do if he did come back? What he if was sorry, if he loved her as much as she loved him, and he never wanted to part with her again? Could she forgive him?
Or was it too late?

I'd take another chance, take a fall, take a shot for you

She would. Bella loved him more than anything, and the emotion that surged through her veins every time she saw him was enough to prove it. And if he came back, she would definitely go back to him, even if it meant dying to do so.

I need you like a heart needs a beat, but it's nothing new

She wondered if he could ever possibly feel the way she does right now, the feeling of needing someone so bad you might die from heartbreak. Did he love her that much?

I loved you with a fire red, now it's turning blue

Thoughts began to doubt themselves in her mind…maybe what he felt was pure passion, and nothing deeper. Bella moved to her bed, drawing the blankets around her, for the world felt so much colder now.

And you say sorry, like an angel heaven let me think was you, but I'm afraid…

Did he do this on purpose? Was he bored with her? And…if he ever came back…would he want her? Would he apologize, or would she be the one begging at his feet?

It's too late to apologize.

What if it was too late? What if he had moved on? Bella went back to her desk, and picked up the pen…

I'm holding on your rope, got me ten feet off the ground

She still loved him, which was for sure. And maybe, in the deepest part of his silent heart, he loved her too. The pen traced new lines next to the old ones, and then the paper was folded and slipped into her pocket.

-----------

Bella stood on the cliff, watching the sea attack them with an unknown fury. She took out the paper and unfolded it, staining it with her tears.
It sailed easily out of her hands, and was lost to the dark depths of the sea.
