"FATHER!" I hear screaming in the distance. 'My son? My son! Legolas! He made it out alive. That's my boy!' I think to myself.
I lift my head and push up off the ground to my feet, screeching in pain. I stammer around trying to get my balance and try to open my eyes but they're covered in my own blood and soldered shut. They feel like they're on fire. I could open one eye to peek out and check my surroundings but that was my limit. I spot my sword in front of me and pick it up to defend myself.
"Father!?" Legolas approached me with concern. I swing my sword around pointing the tip of the blade at Legolas's neck not realising it was him.
"Father, It's me!..." Legolas said in shock.
I lower my sword quickly, "Sorry son." I apologize.
"We need to leave. Smaug isn't finished yet. He going back for seconds. We NEED to go." Legolas guides me out of the castle, tossing my arm around his neck and trying to stand me upright. I hobble to the exit flung over him like a tossed blanket.
We reach the outside edge of Mirkwood forest. Legolas sits me down next to a tree and examines the burns covering my flesh.
"Is it bad?" I ask.
"well it's not great. Your blinded in one eye, broken an ankle and your clothes are half burnt off. Other than that pretty fine." Legolas replies with sarcasm.
I groan in pain trying to adjust my position against the tree.
"How about Mirkwood? Is..." I take a deep breath in trying to catch my breath. "did it survive?" i worry.
Legolas leaves my side and stands up. He gasped slightly.
"Father...Mirkwood. It's gone."
I look up at my son with disbelief. "No.. You're lying." I choke as my voice breaks.
"Mirkwood is destroyed. It's... In flames. The bastard finally got us off guard." Legolas said in shock.
I looked up at my son. A tear rolled down his cheek as he looked across the burnt valleys of Mirkwood. I grab his arm to stand myself up right next to him. As I look out over the valley I see that Legolas wasn't lying. Legolas bit his lip and wiped the tear from his cheek but couldn't hold it in. He nuzzled himself into my shoulder. I hugged him tight as I looked out at the great elven city that once was Mirkwood, my kingdom. It was gone.
