A/N: This is an alternate ending for the Disir. Short drabble, no pairings, reveal fic. Just some wishful thinking on my part.

"Silence isn't like you, Merlin."

Arthur's words shook Merlin out of his internal debating. He looked at Arthur, the perfect picture of a king, sitting in front of him, asking- no, pleading him for answers.

"What would you have me do?"

Merlin's mind whirled. Mordred had to die. He couldn't live to kill Arthur. Merlin had to fulfill his destiny.

The future isn't written in stone.

A single idea, amidst the chaos of Merlin's conflicted mind, shone bright and brought back order to Merlin's consciousness. Merlin supressed a shudder as he realized what he was about to do, then his conflicted emotions gave through to resolve, and Arthur stared quizzicly at his servant as he saw the emotion in Merlin's face. He repeated the question.

"What would you have me do?"

And Merlin then shuddered, and the prince was confused as his servant said;

"It's getting cold. Let's make the fire bigger shall we?"

Arthur gaped at his servant's avoidance, "Merlin-"

"Bærne."

The fire blazed as a single word, barely audible, but completely coherent, put a stop to Arthur's voice, and he watched, enchanted, as the fire changed form, to a dragon, then a butterfly, then a dog chasing a cat, and Arthur was stunned to see Merlin's eyes glow golden, though not because of the flames.

And, because of that one word, his entire world changed.
