The Scent Of Lily

"Come here."

"What?"

"Just come here! I want to show you something."

Severus grabbed Lily by the hand. He led her down a steep grassy hill to a secluded edge of the Lake. They stopped and stared at the water. Lily looked at Severus.

"Ok. So what?"

Severus rolled his eyes. "So we're not there yet." He picked up Lily's wrist and pulled her. They ran along the water's edge, laughing and trying to balance on the rocks without getting their feet wet.

Severus veered off at one point, weaving in and out of the flower-filled trees. Lily followed, trying to find him through the dense branches. When she spotted him, his arms were filled with what looked like twigs and flowers.

"What are you doing?" she asked, trying not to laugh at his strangeness.

"Just wait." He said, grinning. He dumped his contents onto a wide, slightly curved rock. Then he pulled out his wand and recited a spell that seemed to crush and mix the materials together for him. Lily watched, unsure if she should be excited yet. If this was the "cool thing" he wanted to show her, it was certainly not that amazing. Muddy looking goop. Ew. Severus glanced up at her, grinning. "Watch this." He said, and he reached up and plucked a piece of Lily's hair.

"Hey!" Lily said. What in the world was he doing?

He dropped the strand into the mixture. The green and brown muddy mess instantly turned a bright orange-red—the same color as Lily's hair.

"Wow!" Lily said. "That's such a neat trick."

"This?" he said; convinced that if she liked this, what would happen next would blow her away. "This is nothing. Just wait."

Lily watched intently as Severus tapped his wand exactly seven times on the rock. He muttered a spell, and the bright concoction slowly churned upward. It began to make a shape, and before Lily's eyes, the soupy mixture had transformed into a glittering, orange-red lily.

Lily gasped. She glanced at Severus, and he nodded. She reached out and picked up the flower, cupping it in her two hands. It was beautiful.

Severus stared at her. He knew she would love it. He watched as she twirled it in her hands. She brought it up to her nose, and smelled it. Severus saw her eyes close and take in the sweet smell. A small smile crept onto his pale face.

Lily looked up to find Severus staring at her. She smiled, giggling. Severus grinned back at her, and then looked down at the lily. His smile faded, and he leaned in, taking the flower from her. Lily closed her eyes and felt him brush away her hair. He tucked the lily behind her ear. He let his hand fall, lightly brushing the side of her cheek. Lily slowly opened her eyes, and found Severus's face inches from her own. His black eyes seemed to be lost within her green ones. Then Severus rushed in, bringing his lips to hers. Lily stiffened, but then relaxed, leaning into him. He brought his hand to her cheek, and she put her arms around him, pulling him closer. After a moment, their lips parted. They stayed together, holding each other tight. Lily's head rested comfortably on Severus's shoulder. Severus put his head into her fire-red hair and breathed deep. It was everywhere. The scent of Lily.
