'As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with Stark', at once the heads of every person turned to me in shock as I said the words.
'You agree with me? YOU actually agree with me? It's so wonderful to see that after all these years there is actually something we agree on', in all fairness to the man, Tony did genuinely seem shocked. It's not that I don't get on with him. In fact, I've known Tony longer than I've known the rest of the team and we'd both give our lives for the other, but we're just so similar in many ways that our personalities have always clashed.
'Sophie, please. Surely you don't think this is the right way. You of all people don't want the Government telling you what to do. Remember what they did to you before?' Steve was only trying to help, I know that, and it's one of the things I love the most about him, but I am capable of making my own decisions.
'I know what they did to me Steve! It wasn't you who spent three months hooked up to machines while they performed all sorts of tests on you, trying to figure out why you were such as freak of nature!' Years ago I was captured by a secret Government facility who was worried about the powers I had started to show. I was only fifteen and I didn't really understand them myself. It took me a long time to heal the wounds made by them but now I am happier than I've ever been before, I don't want to be on the Government's bad side once again. 'This is the right way. If we sign this document now, we won't face the backlash of the Government later. I've been chased by them before and that's not an experience I am willing to repeat.'
Steve's face dropped, 'I completely disagree. This document is stripping us of all our freedom and making us take responsibility and blame for events that weren't even our fault. The Government ordering us about is not a thing I will stand by and watch, especially not after what happened with HYDRA.'
Tony snarled, 'Whoever would have thought, the perfect Captain America becoming a Government fugitive. I can see the headlines in the newspapers now. You will be hunted down if you don't sign this and they will leave you in a prison to rot.'
'Will you put me there yourself?' Steve and Tony were about to fight, the rest of us could feel it brewing in the air, thankfully though, Vision was the voice of reason.
'It has been a very long day for us all. Perhaps it is best to rest for the night and continue this discussion in the morning.' Everyone nodded their heads in agreement and headed out of the room. Just as I was leaving, I heard Steve call my name.
'Sophie, wait. You can control your powers now, they won't come after you. There's no need for you to sign this document.'
'I can manipulate the elements Steve. I will always be a danger. I can control water, fire, air and ground, that is something that the Government will never allow to walk free. I don't want them to chase me again. That's why I have to pick Tony's side of this argument.'
'Sophie, please. I need you standing beside me. More than I need anyone else.' My heart broke at the broken look on his face. It was covered with more emotion I'd ever seen since he told me that Bucky Barnes had been alive all this time.
'I'm so sorry Steve, but I can't agree with you on this.' Reluctantly, I opened the door to the conference room as he stared after me. I took one look back at his dejected body before disappearing down the corridor.
