Author's note

Hello everybody!

This is my first English fan fiction... I really hope you like it!

As you can probably see, English is not my first language and that's the reason why I'm in dire need of a beta reader.

If you're interested, please let me know... I would love to get some help.

Now, without further ado, I present to you... THE FIRST CHAPTER.

I hope you enjoy it...

Talk to you soon guys and have a great day.

I'm walking down the street, freezing my ass off, and I can't stop thinking about how I ended up in this place!

I used to have a life before all this, a good life, a life that wasn't about awful Sunday nights, spent at the local bar with the worst company ever!

I snort loudly as another gust of wind forces me to close yet another button on my jacket.

Dear God! If I had needed time off to think, couldn't I have gone to a nice, sunny place like L.A. or Orlando?

Of course not! And since I am more of a do-it-now-and-think-about-the-consequences-later kind of girl, I decided to move to this little town in Montana,

where the winter lasts ten months... Great!

Too focused on my own thoughts, I hear her 'voice', or should I say her 'mind's voice', just a few seconds before actually seeing her sitting on a bench on the

other side of the road and then... I start laughing, because her musings are very similar to mine.

' How the heck did I end up here? I don't even know where I am! Oh my God... I'm so cold and definitely scared! I can't even think clearly...

maybe I just need some blood!'

Blood? Oh hell no... a bloody vampire in my town! What do I need to do to get rid of them? This is one of the reason why I moved to such a small town...

I always thought that they usually preferred big cities... you know more people, more food! Apparently I' ve been wrong...

God this night could have not been worse!

I get close to the girl and take a good look at her: she's very pretty! She has long platinum hair and jade green eyes, her skin is white and even if she is sitting down

at the moment, I can tell she is rather tall. She doesn't seem very dangerous but I have learned through times that appearances can be deceiving.

She only notices me when I'm practically in front of her and what makes me laugh is the fact that, hearing her thoughts, I can tell that she's more scared of me than

I am of her!

I grew up with Anne Rice's books and in those stories, the vampires are usually the villains, but looking at this girl, I really can't bring myself to think about her that

way.

Focusing on her thoughts and trying to make something out of that mess, I step forward and I asked her the million dollar question

"Are you okay? Do you need help?"

She studies me for a second and from the look on her face I can tell that, yes, she really needs my help!

When she doesn't make a move, I decide that maybe I should introduce myself and, plastering a smile on my face, I start talking

"My name is Rose! What's yours?"

After a few seconds during which her indecision is clear on her face and in her thoughts, she decides to answer

" My name is Lissa! Nice to meet you..."

"Nice to meet you too Lissa! I don't mean to be nosy but what are you doing here in the middle of the night?" I ask her and even thought I can easily read the

answer in her mind, I give her time to speak, mainly because I'm curious about whether she's gonna tell me the truth or not

" I ran away... from home! I got on the first bus I could find and, after many hours, it stopped here"

Her answer is not completely sincere but it is actually quite close to the truth: she didn't run from home, but from a vampire school ( who knew that those things

actually existed). Her parents and her brother died a few months ago and after a couple of incidents at St. Vlad's Academy ( that's the name of her school) she

decided to leave that place. I can pick up the sadness in her mind the moment she starts thinking about her family and the fact that their gone and I cannot help but

relate to her:

I know very well what it feels like and I wouldn't wish the feeling on my worst enemy!

"So I gather you don't have a place to stay" At this she shakes her head and before I can even stop myself, the words are out of my mouth

"You can stay with me if you want. I live alone and I wouldn't mind having a roommate"

She looks at me with wide eyes and, after wondering for a few seconds if it's wise to go home with a total stranger, she decides that this is her best chance.

"Thank you very much... I appreciate it! Also because I have no idea where I am"

"Baker, Montana or as I love to call it: the middle of nowhere!"

She chuckles at my last sentence, while getting up from the bench and following me home. Once inside, I show her the house and the guest bedroom;

when I'm sure she has everything she needs, I urge he to go take a shower, telling her that I'll wait for her in the kitchen.

When my ears pick up the noise of the water running, I start thinking about how to handle this situation: I'm pretty sure that my best option is to tell her the truth

about me, hoping that she will do the same. I'm so lost in thoughts that I almost jump as I hear somebody clearing his throat.

I spin around and notice that the sweatpants that I lent to Lissa are a little short and for a second, something that dangerously resembles jealousy, crosses my mind.

Not that I'm complaining.. I mean I know I'm beautiful: thick long dark brow hair, dark brown eyes, tanned skin and just the right amount of curves... what more

could somebody ask for, right? But still, I would have loved to be taller! Leaving my dreams aside, I decide to come clean.

"I know you're a vampire Lissa"

Her eyes widen and in two long strides, she's in front of me trying to compel me

"I will only be here tonight. Tomorrow I will leave and you won't remember anything about me" she says

I can feel myself getting sleepy, but I know for sure that, past that, nothing will happen to me. Apparently my being weird doesn't allow vampires to compel me;

at least something good came from this 'reading people's mind' thing.

"I can't be compelled Lissa. Don't worry! You're secret's safe with me...so what do you say if we sit down and we both tell the truth? I'll even go first!"

After a few seconds, she nods and follows me to the couch

"I read people's mind. I've always been able to" I say matter-of-factly, like there's nothing special about it

I hear the question in her mind and I answer before the words are out of her mouth

"No, I'm human! I don't know why I'm able to do what I do, my parents never told me and then last year they died so.."

She looks at me with such sadness in her eyes that I know, even before checking, that she's thinking about her family

"I'm sorry for your loss" I tell her sincerely and to that she answers with a smile that doesn't reach her eyes.

After that, most of our conversation takes place in her mind and I only interrupt her a couple of times to ask her some questions.

She tells me everything: who she really is ( who would have thought that I would meet a princess one day) , what happened to her family, why she left and how her

world works.

She tells me that there are two different kind of vampires: the Moroi ( or as I call them in my head, the good vampires) and the Strigoi ( the bad ones).

While they both live off of human blood, the Moroi can walk in daylight, even if it slightly bothers them, while the Strigoi can't and while the Strigoi are actually dead

and immortal, the Moroi can die. This is were the story gets really interesting! She tells me about the Damphirs: half human, half vampires, fighters, practically

bodyguards to the Moroi.

When we're done with the explanations, I can hear the laughter in her head and I cannot help but start laughing myself!

Seriously, the situation is ridiculous! A mind reader is sitting on a couch with a vampire, exchanging life experiences while drinking hot cocoa...

Who wouldn't laugh at the sight of something like this?

After a while we regain our composure and I get up to get something to eat, but in the meantime I can clearly hear in her head how hungry she is

I wonder if what I'm about to do is the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life, but unfortunately my words are out of my mouth before I can even stop them

"If I let you drink from me, would you be able to control yourself? "

I can see the shock in her eyes but, after a second, she nods and walks to me. I have to admit I have never been more scared in my life:

what if she loses control? What if I die because of this?

My thoughts are interrupted by her own: she's actually showing me that she's done this plenty of times and it's completely safe.

I decide to believe her but when she puts her fangs on my neck, I cannot avoid shivering in fear.

I can feel some pain in the beginning, but it's bearable; after a few seconds though, I start feeling light headed as if I'm drunk and then the euphoria takes over.

Lissa steps away from me and I need a couple of minutes to get back to reality just to see an apologetic smile on her face.

I shrug as if what we just did was noting special and, after retrieving a slice of pizza from the microwave, I make my way back to the couch.

We fall asleep right there, watching an episode of True Blood that right now doesn't seem so absurd anymore.

TWO YEARS LATER...

I open the door to my apartment just to find Lissa, sitting on the couch, watching a cooking show... Apparently she finds them exhilarating!

She greets me telepathically and I scream an hello before going into my room to change into something comfier.

While looking for some sweatpants, my mind focuses on the events of the last two years.

I'm actually very grateful for Lissa: I really needed a friend and she's just perfect! The fact that we're both weirdos really helped our bonding!

We never left my apartment and we managed to turn it into a home. We didn't run into many problems, mostly because of my mind reading abilities,

but even when we couldn't avoid them, we faced them bravely.

I've never been more grateful for my father's fighting obsession than in the last two years of my life, the fact that he wanted me to be a great fighter actually saved

us a couple of times.

So focused on my thoughts, I realize too late that I'm invading a man's mind and in mere seconds I realize what I'm dealing with.

Trying not to attract too much attention, I make my way back to the living room, stopping in front of Lissa and making a weird expression

so that she realizes that something's wrong.

I can feel the panic in her mind but right now I don't have time to deal with that; I'm more focused on finding a way out of this.

Damn it! Our only way to get to the street is through the front door and I'm pretty sure that, just outside, there are six big Damphirs waiting for us!

I grab Lissa's wrist and after taking the bags that we always leave by the door, I walk out into the freezing December air.

Before I can even say a word, six big guys are in front of us and while Lissa takes a step back, I take my fighting stance and get into their heads just

to understand their tactics.

In a matter of minutes my head is throbbing because of the excessive use of my powers, but I try to ignore it and focus on their thoughts again.

I gather that my most dangerous opponent is some guardian named Dimitri Belikov, but I don't even have the time to look around

before being distracted by an amazing voice with a slight Russian accent

"Princess, we're here to take you back to St. Vlad's Academy"

I turn around and I'm pretty sure that if the situation wasn't so serious, I would be drooling right now.

He is tall, very tall, and has an amazing body; long brown hair and beautiful chocolate brown eyes... He is a god!

I stare at him for a few more seconds and than I shake my head and make my way back to reality.

"If you want to take her with you, first you have to go through me!" I say, resuming my fighting stance.

He turns his beautiful eyes on me and I can see a grin on his face; he's thinking that I don't have a chance against him, but I'm pretty sure that he'll change

his mind in a matter of seconds. He's still looking at me when his jaw drops and his eyes widen

"You're human?" he asks in disbelief and I choose that moment to attack him.
