A/N: This is the revised version. That is all I've got to say, besides that I don't own LotR, or any person, place, thing, etc, etc, related to it.

Prologue

Moonlight filtered through the leaves of the tall trees of Fangorn, casting flickering shadows on the ground as they moved in the wind.

A dark shape flitted through the light and crouched beneath the cover of a bush, peering warily into a small clearing. Hazel eyes narrowed as it watched the two sleeping figures. Who were they? Few save the foul orcs and a some wizards ever dared to enter Fangorn Forest, yet there they were, sleeping peaceful as could be, right in Treebeard's home.

One of them rolled over and let out a long snore, then sat up and rubbed its eyes. The figure stumbled back in surprise, wincing as a twig snapped loudly beneath its foot. It remained perfectly still as the intruder's head turned sharply in its direction.

"Hello?" He called softly. "Is somebody there?"

The stranger squinted into the darkness a few seconds more, then muttered something to itself and laid back down. The figure turned sharply around and dashed away into the woods, looking for answers.

--

"Treebeard!"

The mysterious figure broke cover near the Ent, revealing itself to be a small girl, who looked around twelve winters, with long, tangled brown hair, slightly dirty tan skin, clothed in a black tunic and leggings with a white cord around her waist.

"Treebeard!" she repeated, panting, as the Ent slowly turned to face her. "There are some… things… in your home, right now, just lying there! Do you know who they are? Where are they from?" the words tumbled out in a nervous rush, as she tried to catch her breath.

The Ent stared at her for a moment, then, slowly, like all Ents, began to speak. "They are hobbits." he said shortly.

"Hobbits?" She asked, thoroughly confused. "What are hobbits? Where do they come from? Are they dangerous? Will they…"

The Ent held up a hand to stop the endless rush of questions. "Now don't be hasty, young Alshee."

The girl glared. "I am not young. I'm almost as old as you are."

The Ent ignored the statement, turning slowly to continue walking.

"Oi!" cried Alshee "Aren't you going to answer my questions?"

"Now is not the time for questions. I have work to do."

The Ent strode away, leaving behind a baffled Alshee, who sat down quietly at the base of a tree.

"If only you could speak. You might answer my questions."

There she sat, until the next morning, a deep cry of "hoom, hoom" rang through the woods. She leapt quickly to her feet.

"Entmoot?" she half yelled half asked no one in particular. "But that can't be…" The sentence trailed off as she dashed away through the woods.

--

Alshee arrived at the Entmoot as more Ents were coming, but kept warily back in the trees, when she saw the strange intruders at the edge of the clearing. She glared at them, though they could not see her.

The Ents began to speak slowly in old Entish, and though she could understand it, she did not bother to listen, for the words took far too long to say.

She wandered a little farther back into the woods, and circled around until she was behind the strangers. She climbed a tree where she sat above them, watching and listening until Treebeard sent them away with Quickbeam. She then wandered away, choosing to ignore their presence and try to forget about them.

It was in that way that Alshee never learned anything about the War of the Ring, until five years later.
