Elizabeth was quite pleased with herself when she convinced Mr. Burke to leave Megaton. It was the first time she had used flirting to get her way.

However, all that pride faded when the first letter arrived. Elizabeth wss in shock as she realized the man believed her affection to be genuine. She figured the best thing to do would be to let him down easy.

Dear Mr. Burke she began, but that was all she wrote before heading out into the wasteland and leaving the letter forgotten.

By the third letter, she was infactuated with him. Mr. Burke filled her thoughts, and soon he would come back to her.

On the day she received the fourth letter, she was ecstatic and ran home to read it. As she read it, an expression of confusion crossed her face, then one of betrayal and grief.

Elizabeth began writing a letter. She swore that, unlike the others, it would be finished and he would read it.

...

Mr. Burke returned to Tenpenny Tower to find a small envelope on his desk. He picked up the letter and began to read her small, curved writing.

Dear Mr. Burke,

When I received my first letter from you, I believed you were insane. I actually began to look forward to reading your letters. My hesrt would skip a beat when a new one came in. Later I realized I had started to love you. After reading your last letter, I was crushed. The letters mocked me and made me feel like a fool.

I read them repeatedly to see what I had done wrong. To see when you changed. I saw none. When I visited the tower, you weren't there. I realized you must be busy, and I was a fool. But if being a fool meant I could have you, then that is exactly what I wanted to be.

Mr. Burke, you made a promise to me and I expect you to keep it. I am ready for us to be fools together. When you finally come back to Megaton, we will be.

With love,

Elizabeth

For the first time since he sent out his last letter, Mr. Burke felt joy. He might not be with her today, but he would have her soon.
