Disclaimer: I own nothing; I am just playing with the characters.

Author's Notes: I don't know if this is finished yet. What do you think? And it's in Trinity's POV, about Neo towards the beginning of the first movie. Enjoy!

You leave a wake of hope behind you. A type of hope that can come from only the newly unplugged. A type of hope that can only come from those who have never experienced total despair. Your 'hope wake' leaves other hopeful, so stop it. Getting others hopes up will only make them resent you when those very hopes that you started are crushed and thrown in their faces.

It's not that I don't hope the war will end, it will end someday. Keyword being someday, as in someday far away. Hoping the war will end soon would destroy us. We would hesitate to take lives, wanting to spare them because ' the war will be over soon'. If those people don't kill us outright, agonizing over their death would. If those very people we try to spare do not become Agent's and kill us point-blank, then not sleeping for fear of seeing their faces in our dreams will. Hoping for the unattainable will kill us.

But you don't seem to realize that. You don't realize that because you are still an innocent. You still believe everybody has a good side, that nobody would lie to you. You still believe that if an Agent saw you, he would give a cough and say hello rather than just emptying his entire clip into the back of your head. If your hope will kill us, then your innocence would revive us.

Even though you will be stripped of that innocence, to become hardened like us. Hardened so that you can take a life and not stop to grieve during battle. Hardened so that you don't get too attached to anybody. Hardened so that your hopes won't get raised and all you'll need to get up in the morning is a shot of whatever Dozer makes in that still of his.

Other people see your innocence as well, and not just your shipmates, Agents see it too and it is they will try to use it to capture you, to destroy you. Switch and Apoc think you need more training, more sims to get you resigned to killing. To try to help out Mouse will design you your own 'Woman in Red'. And Morpheus, well he'll try to warn you about the dangers of being unprepared and unready to face reality. I won't do any of that, I'll just watch. Watch you lose all your innocence and watch your eyes cloud over as if to protect you from the scenes you will be faced with. All of this will make me grieve but nobody will know it, least of all you.

So if it is your hope that will destroy and your innocence that will save, we had better unplug somebody soon. Because we are going to need their innocence to revive you.
