An Evening At Home

I do not own Naruto.

Sakura glanced out the window. Powdery white snowflakes twirled and spun in the night air as the howling winds torn through the tree's branches. The tree's gnarled fingers tapped against the window. She leaned back into the sofa and pulled her blanket closer to her body. No one should be out and about on a night like this, she thought. Sakura turned her attention to the fireplace. The flames greedily devoured the logs. Fire light shone against her pretty face as a frown marred her angelic features. The grandfather clock struck ten. Where was Sasuke? Worry began to form an uncomfortable knot in the pit of her stomach. He should have been home by now. What on earth was he doing?

It was Christmas Eve. She wanted to spend the evening with him. A small cry interrupted her gloomy thoughts. Sakura sighed as she headed towards the bedroom. She turned on the lights. The young pink haired woman scooped up a wailing infant from her crib. Sakura carried her daughter back with her to the living room. She cradled Kana in her arms until the crying ceased. Despite her mood, Sakura couldn't help but smile at the child whose eyes were as bright a green as her own. She smoothed out Kana`s unruly raven hair.

She glanced at the Christmas tree. A small pile of presents sat under the tree. Most of the gifts were addressed to little Kana as is expected. Sakura curled up on the sofa next to Kana. The little one had already fallen asleep. She carefully arose from the sofa. Perhaps she should call Naruto; Sasuke might have stopped by on the way home. Just as she reached for the phone the front door opened. Sasuke stepped through the doorway. Sakura rushed to greet him. "Where have you been," she cried.

"Nowhere special,"he replied flatly.

Sakura was about to challenge this when she noticed something white poking out from behind his back. Before he could stop her, Sakura reached for it. She was not surprised to find a plush white unicorn with a red ribbon around its neck. Sakura chuckled. Sasuke rolled his eyes.

"Sasuke if you keep this up there won't be any space for Kana in her room. She'll be out numbered by stuffed animals."

"Hn", he replied.

Sasuke placed the plush unicorn under the tree. Sakura smiled as she watched Sasuke put their daughter to bed. His expression was uncharacteristically soft. The couple returned to the living room to watch the firelight in comfortable silence.
