Cur Non

Disclaimer: The character Francis Bonnefoy belongs to Hidekaz Himaruya.

1776

Francis thought that something was wrong as soon as La Victoire left the waters of Bordeaux. But that was absurd, wasn't it? All those from important families were forbidden from leaving the country, some even ordered not to do so by the king himself. Surely they would not defy him...But as he sat in his office, combing his fingers through his hair and waiting for any news of the fools supposedly on the ship, he wasn't quite so sure.

"They love you. Even the king loves you." Francis remarked, leaning against the wall of Lafayette's home. He wasn't supposed to have visitors, but exceptions could be made for countries. "A hero of two worlds, they call you, mon ami." The boy, for he was still not older than twenty three, smiled.

"It does not matter. The war has not been won quite yet...We need your help." The blond laughed at Lafayette's statement.

"Talk to the king. Decisions are not the nation's to make." He said. Lafayette crossed his arms, wearing the same expression he had when requesting to go to America.

"Well, they should be."

1789-1791

Revolution, revolution! Francis looked at the boy he had once admired (though he would not admit it) with disdain. He sided with neither monarchists nor republicans; he had no place amongst them. He had to go.

1799

"You're back."

"Of course. France isn't yet free."

"I'm not?" Lafayette scoffed.

"I don't like Napoleon."

"You don't like anyone, do you? You can never be happy with the current rulers."

"I was happy with Washington."

"You're not American."

"So?"

July 4, 1917

Francis watched the memorial service with morbid interest. American soldiers honoring a Frenchman...Admittedly, a Frenchman who was an honorary citizen and buried in soil from their country. And admittedly, a Frenchman that he did not understand. Always spreading his American ideas, always speaking English...However...

Perhaps he had been too cruel to the boy, all those years ago.

This is unintelligible, meaningless gibberish. IGNORE IT.
