Sapphire eyes stared blankly from the entrance of the Sunset Shrine. The once, not quite pristine, but homey shrine was destroyed, broken down and partially burnt. The house beyond the perimeter was a mere memory it's charred remains the only sign it had even existed and the well house that held so many memories was gone, leaving a broken well behind. The Goshinboku Tree swayed towards her longingly yet the branches seemed to wilt in sorrow of the destruction that had taken place.

The Higurashi Family no longer existed, annihilated along with the shrine. There would be no words of comfort from her okaasan, no more crazy made up illnesses from her jiichan, and no more teasing her otouto about his crush. She was alone.

Shutting her eyes to stop anymore tears from being shed Kagome began her descent down the shrine steps, passing under the broken torii.

A familiar figure waited at the bottom of the steps his appearance unchanged despite the centuries he had waited to see the Shikon no Miko. His arm wrapped around Kagome's waist the moment her feet touched the ground and she was drawn into a warm embrace.

Kagome slowly lifted her hand to clutch the front of his shirt, wrinkling the perfectly ironed dress shirt as she kept her tears at bay.

"It's only been a few weeks," she murmured brokenly, the horrors of war replaying in her eyes.

"It's been 500 centuries, miko," the usually cold emotionless voice was softer and passionate and warm breath tickled her ear. "The past has always been in the past, you must accept the present."

Kagome's grip tightened at the words before a sad smile slipped onto her face and she leaned back to look up at the handsome male. His eyes were a darker shade, his facial markings were gone, his hair was shorter and tied back, and instead of his armor he wore a business suit with the jacket slung over his shoulder, other than that he remained practically unchanged.

"You look the same, though I miss moko moko-sama, Sesshomaru," Kagome said softly a blush spreading across her face as she pulled away from the smirking taiyoukai, wondering when he had loosened up.

"Come miko, you have a new life ahead of you," Sesshomaru stated, his eyes melting back into cold detachment as he motioned to the silver limo behind him.

Taking one last glance back at the devastated shrine she could still see the smoke rising into the dark sky, fire lighting up the night, and screams echoing around her.

"Miko," Sesshomaru urged causing Kagome to quickly snap out of her reverie and step into the limo, unprepared for what was to come.
