Summery: Buffy's grave lies empty. Dawn can only hope it'll stay that way. Quick one shot.
A/N: I hate tenses. The past sounded awkward. And as you will soon find out so does the present. -dies-
Dawn Summers smiles down at the grave in front of her. She wants to cry. She feels like she should be crying. But all she can do is smile numbly.
Even though Buffy is back the grave remains. Open. Waiting for her.
It seems to Dawn that each day could be Buffy's last and that she'd be put back in there. Into that damp hole, lying in wait there, in front of a cold granite marker. Sometimes, when Dawn looks at Buffy, she can't help but think that maybe a bit of her is still down there. That maybe Buffy hadn't come back completely.
Other times Dawn finds herself wondering if maybe it was all just a dream. Maybe Buffy wasn't back after all. Partially or completely. Maybe she'd wake up one day and realize that none of it had even been real. That Buffy was still down there. In the earth.
No one knew that she went there. She didn't think that it would ever occur to anyone to look for here there. At the empty grave of her once dead sister. At first she'd only gone out of curiosity. Or at least that's what she'd told herself. But she'd known all along that that wasn't the real reason. She'd gone for proof. She had to go there to see that she wasn't still there. She needed proof that Buffy really was back.
As the impending danger of the First neared her visits had become more frequent.
"Here's to hoping you'll stay empty for a few more years," she whispers as she drops a yellow daisy into the cool depths of the grave.
Once she's done she turns away and starts on her way back home. It's beginning to get dark and Buffy's expecting her home.
A few minutes later a figure emerges from the shadows of a nearby crypt and moves to where Dawn had been standing only moments ago.
He drops a slightly wrinkled daisy into the grave.
"Here's to hoping Bit," he mutters into the darkness.
