Happy Birthday
I fell back onto my bed. Huh. Some birthday. My 16th birthday too! I always imagined mine to be in a cave. The fire flickering in the dark. The flock sitting in a circle around it. Not this. Me, at home, alone. As my boyfriend does his project with Dr Stupendous. Apperantly, I'm taking away his freedom and I don't allow him to have any other friends. Fine! FINE! They can do whatever in her stupid little pink, fluffy and full-of-joy room. I'm going to sit here. And be glad I even made it to 16. Must. Be. Optimistic.
" Max?"
" Yes, Angel?"
" Happy birthday, from I, Nudge, Iggy and Gazzy. But Gazzy just evacuated the shopping mall. He wasn't much of a help." She was so cute, I couldn't even correct her grammar.
" Thanks sweetie!" She gave me a quick hug before running out of the room. The little red velvet box looked so fragile. I was secretly hoping it was a surprise from Fang. And that he wasn't really with HER. But hey, we can't always get what we want.
A little card was inside. With a huge heart and a pair of detailed wings on it's back. Nudge drew it. It was her secret talent. I placed it on my bed next to me. The next was an extremely small ring bomb. It looked like a ring but it was really a bomb. I laughed. And put it on. Not bad, my little soldier.
There was a triangular shaped paper, with '1 free kiss/hug' written messily on it. Iggy. I am going to get this framed. I wish Fang would give me something like this. Or even be home for my birthday. Last but not least, a picture of me, my blond hair cut to shoulder length. We were on the beach, 2 months ago. When things just started going downhill. Before my happiness started slipping away. Before Fang started drifting away. Blinked back tears and attempted to stuff all the gifts back into the little red box. I gave up 5… seconds later. How did they even fit them in without crumpling the pieces? I'll never know. I placed the small tokens on my bedside and
slumped back onto my bed. There was a soft knock on my door. " Come in." I tried my best not to show my hatred of him as he walked into the room, wait, hatred? " What, Fang?"
"Happy birthday, love."
" Belated-birthday you mean. It's 1a.m."
"Oh! I didn't realize it was this late." Yeah. You lost track of time while with her huh? Wonder what you were doing that you were so engrossed.
" Yeah? Well, I'm going to sleep now. So, if you could please leave? Yeah, I'd greatly appreciate that." I rolled over so that my back was facing him. I waited for the soft click of the door, I waited, and waited. It never came. "Leave, Fang!" I sat up abruptly, "Can't you see I'm trying to sleep?" I yelled at him. I realized he was looking at the picture Angel took.
" Why don't your eyes sparkle anymore?" His voice was sad and full of pain. " Why don't they smile when you do?"
" Why? WHY? You want to know WHY? I'll tell you why!" Before I could shout the reason, I stopped myself, this might just ruin everything. All that I fought for. All that I live for. " Because, you're not leaving the room." I tried to smile. But I think it came out more like a scowl.
"Oh." Fang looked through his long ebony black fringe. His eyes filled with emotions. " Good night I guess."
" I guess." I plopped back down as Fang closed the door behind him. A sob racked through my body. What have I done?
