I landed on the rooftop, my cape fluttering in the wind. Catwoman landed a few feet away; an involuntary chill of warning passed through my form, even though she's out of the rogue game now.
"You called?" she hissed and I winced; I asked her to meet me here like some kind of dog, not smart. She had destroyed much better heroes, sidekicks and even rogues than me for lesser insults. I saw the fifteen years of my life flash before my eyes.
"Earth to pest!" she called.
"Oh!" I came back to earth, "I need help—"
"Look Birdie, I have tried to pound this into your guys' heads; I AM NOT A CRIME-FIGHTER!"
"No! Selina, it's not crime-related at all! It's a—girl issue…"
"Ah." She sat, her legs hanging off the edge, and motioned for me to join her. I did.
"Whassup little birdie," she asked, I began swinging my legs back and forth, starting out, "Well there's this girl I really like…"
"I kinda figured that, civilian or costumed?"
"Costume."
"Vigilante or Rogue?"
"Heroine."
"Ahhh Batgirl then."
I started, "How'd'ya figure it out?"
She laughed, "Well you never leave Gotham other than for the Titans and of the Titans Koriand'r is married, unless her husband kicked the bucket again, Raven is with Garfield Logan and Wondergirl with Superboy. And if we're talking about costumed women in Gotham, Helena's too old for you, so is Black Canary. Barbara's with Dick and Stephanie…"
I look away, Stephanie was dead. By a rookie mistake. She wasn't cut out for the Life.
Selina sighed, "I'm sorry I brought her up Tim…"
"It's alright, I'm fine."
"No, no you're not. You're not going to be fine for a long time. You're gonna move on sure, but it's gonna haunt you. Always in the back of your mind, ready to spring at its first chance. Don't become like Bruce okay Tim?" she smiled softly, "How's her little boy doing?"
I looked up, surprised. She laughed again, "Yes, both Bruce and I know that you check in on him twice every month. Last year you left him a Tonka truck on his doorstep for his birthday. Barbara knows too. His parents were unsure of you visiting at first weren't they?"
I nodded, a small smile claiming my lips, "Yeah, they thought I'd be recruiting him for the Life. Now they're pretty cool about it, they even let me take him out on the line every once in awhile." I frowned, "You don't think I'm weird, for looking in on him, do you?"
She frowned slightly, "Maybe its' a bit unhealthy, but I could see why you do it. For one he's the only thing left that's connected to Stephanie; two, his maternal grandfather may try something and three other Rogues may try something if they find out about him."
"So do you think I should ask Cassie out with me being as messed up as I am?"
She nodded, grinning, "She'll be able to straighten you out."
"As far as I know she hasn't ever been on a date-date before."
She shrugged, "Then don't make it like a date-date, just an evening with a friend with some decidedly more than friendly overtones. You're going to have to take it slow with her Tim, I mean super-slow. She's not like other girls."
"Oh I know." My watch went off, I stood up.
"Say hi to Davy for me."
I nodded and set my line, swinging away.
