You want to help? Then get that family into a room and stitch up that girl's face
I quickly set up a room with fresh covers and a suture tray. I'm so terrified for what's to come, For April. For our baby. For us. Right now though I need to help this little girl. Who is also probably terrified.
"Ok Mia, how about we get that cut on your face cleaned up.", I say gently as I lift the small child onto the bed.
The little girl looks at the tray and then casts her gaze down and starts to whimper
"Hey" I say softly sitting on a stool and wheeling over to meet the child's gaze. "What are the tears for? You're ok. Everything is going to be ok"
"How do you know Dr Avery? My brother is hurt, my mom is hurt and I'm scared.", she says glancing over to the suture tray again
"We have some of the best doctors in the world working here. They're going to take really good care of your brother and your mom I promise. And in the meantime Im going to take really good care of you. I know you're scared, needles and stiches are scary but I promise to do my very best for you and it'll be over in no time."
"Tell you what we'll take it one step at a time ok?" I ask and the little girl nods.
"Ok so right now I just want you to lay back under the light close your eyes and pretend youre at the beach in the sun. Good girl" I say as I wheel over the suture tray and prepare the freezing. "Now I want you to take some deep breaths in and out and stay nice and still, the worst part is almost over. Youre being so brave Mia" I say as I look up and catch April watching from outside the window. How long had she been there?
I place one hand gentle on the little girl's forehead and use the other to inject the freezing "Shh, good job little one, don't worry Ive got you." I say as I finish the freezing and begin to stich.
A few minutes later Im done and showing the little girl her newly healed cut. "See Mia I told you I'd do my best for you."
"Everything is going to be ok" she says
I nod, locking eyes with April who is still watching through the window "Everything is going to be ok.".
