Remus sat upon the steps, his head deep in the world of his imagination. He loved to sit out here, amongst nothing but nature and his own mind, but sometimes he found himself thinking that maybe, just maybe, it would be better for him to be in touch with reality a little more.

And for this, he had lost his best friend, his lover.

Sirius Black, the one he had gone to such lengths to get in the first place, had now announced the fact that he must break up with Remus. He didn't say why, just that he must - although Remus knew straight away why. Because he was going mad.

The birds in the trees twittered, and the wind blew the branches softly, until they created a kind of fan that wafted down onto him. He felt somewhat more peaceful up here than he did in his sleep. Nightmares could reach him in his sleep, yet whilst he was awake, nothing could possibly harm him. Nothing but his own conscience.

Remus' tried to forget about Sirius. He wasn't worth thinking about, he told himself, yet he knew that really, he was; he was worth everything. He had come up here for the weekend to escape Sirius, to get away from the handsome, chiselled face, and those stormy grey eyes that he had fallen in love with a few years previously. But try as he may, the thoughts would never leave him.

The steps were set into a hollow, and somehow, Remus felt protected from the rest of the world. For this was the most protected place his house had to offer, and he was so used to spending his time up here, once he got home, it was second nature to wander out into the gardens, walk up the banking, and sit on the steps amonst the trees.

"Remus," whispered a voice from above. A first, he was sure it was the trees that wre speaking to him, but then he remembered his mental state. Yet they continued to whisper into his ears, the same word againand again, never sopping, forever urging and whispering right into his ears.

"Shut up!" he shouted, and sat down on the step with a thud so hard that it hurt his thighs.

"Remus, hon!" he heard the voice say again. This time he was certain it was not his imagination, and looked up to see a pair of grey eyes peering down at him from the tree. Sirius had been watching him all the time, and it made him mad.

"What the Hell are you doing here, Siri? You broke up with me, remember?" he uttered, raising his voice yet again. I was rare that he got this mad, but Sirius had driven him to the brink of insanity.

"No...I didn't. That's why I'm here."

Sirius was smiling, yet Remus felt he had absolutely nothing to smile about.

"Yes you did, I remember. Please don't tell me I'm so mad I imagined it."

"You're not mad, hon. People think you're mad because you're....with me. And....other things. But you're not mad!"

"Okay, then why do I think you broke up with me?" By this time, Remus had tears in his eyes - and Remus never cried.

"I didn't! James and Pete did, not me!"

"What?"

"It was....a polyjuice prank and it got out of hand. I never broke up with you! What makes you think I'd do that?"

Remus closed his eyes.

"I don't know. Look....I went to such lengths to get you, I was sure it was going to end terribly. Please don't hate me."

"I don't hate you. I love you, silly."

When Remus felt those soft lips that he had been denied the taste of for so long touch his own, he knew that Sirius truly was his own.
