The Most Perfect Day

For Carlie
on her twenty-fourth birthday

She would look so beautiful, he knew. She always seemed so awkward, but she could be graceful when she wanted to be. She would just float down the aisle, looking nowhere but at him.

Her eyes would sparkle with love and excitement and perhaps a bit of apprehension, but she would have a slight smile on her sweet lips and her skin would positively glow.

Would she wear white? He hoped so. Somehow, he couldn't picture her in anything but black, but surely she wouldn't do that to him. Not on their wedding day.

Their wedding day. How sweet that sounded. The most perfect day of his life. The day when all his dreams would finally come true.

Galinda would be there, he knew, probably wishing she was wearing pink, but dressed in a compromise colour instead. Perhaps purple. But he wouldn't see her. All he would see would be his beautiful bride.

And then she would be standing there, right in front of him, looking even more radiant close up. Everything would go by in a blur until he was finally allowed to enfold her in his arms and kiss her senseless – for the first time as husband and wife.

He knew everyone would be festivating the night away; his parents would be so proud of him, and would readily welcome Elphaba to the family. They loved her as if she were their own.

Yet amidst all the activity going on around him, for the first time, he would not be the life of the party. Instead, he would sit on the sidelines, content just to be with his wife. His wife. Content just to be with her and impatient for the night to be over so he could have her all to himself.

But that would be just the beginning. For then they would have their whole lives spread out before them; a whole lifetime waiting to be lived together.

"Fiyero? Are you even listening to me?"

Fiyero's head snapped up. "Sorry, what were you saying?"

"Come on, Fiyero, I need you to concentrate. If you don't, you're going to fail this exam."

"Sorry," Fiyero apologized, returning his gaze to his textbook.

Yes, they would have an entire lifetime just to spend together.

Of course, he actually had to propose to her first.
