Please Understand
"Where are we going?" a little girl asked. I just looked down. 'How can I explain this to her? She just a little girl. It could break her heart.' I thought. "I...I don't know." I muffled under a flame orange parka.
She cried the whole way. It was heartbreaking. She doesn't understand. Will she ever understand?
Later when stars sparkled through clouds, I crawled through a small opening. She been awake, waiting for me, I don't know. "Oh it's you." she said, managing a smile. "Why do you come when I'm sad?" she asked. I just stared. "You are not alone. No matter where you go, no matter what you do, I will always be here. Do you understand Karen? I asked. "I'll try." she replied. "Don't try, do." I said before making my escape.
The next day, Karen walked up to me, looking like she did the other morning. "Kenny, where did Mommy and Daddy go?" she sniffled. I laced my arms around her. "They got in trouble. I don't know where they are." I whispered. She started crying, allowing it to soak through my parka. "They do care for us. Mom and Dad just do stupid stuff without thinking." I continued. She kept crying and squeezing her little arms around me. "Please understand, Karen. Mom and Dad probably aren't coming back. I'll take you. Even if our foster parents won't." I finally said. She looked up. She released her arms. "I...I want my guardian angel." she whispered loudly. She ran up the stairs, crying. 'Would you understand that I'm your guardian angel? Would you understand that I care, even though no one seems to? Please understand Karen. I thought.
