I don't own Criminal Minds

A short story for all you CM fans out there!

Enjoy

Spencer Reid stood next to Emily's grave. His heart felt so still in his chest as he tried to hold back the sobs that bubbled at the surface. He didn't want it to be true; he didn't want to accept the fact that his dear friend…and secret lover Emily Prentiss was dead.

He remembered their first kiss, he was struggling with his drug addiction but she reached out to him and helped him through it. One day, while out for a casual dinner they shared a kiss outside of the restaurant. It was a simple kiss but it meant the world to them.

Since that day, they had been lover in secret. Spending time together when they weren't on cases. Going to museums, picnics, movies, and simple dinners at home with candle light. Their love blossomed and they spent whenever they possibly could together. Still they kept it secret, lest they wanted to lose their jobs.

It was a beautiful day, not too long before her untimely death, that he asked her to marry him.

However…she refused….

Confused and heartbroken, he asked why? But she had been acting…differently lately; like she was hiding something or something was terribly wrong. No matter how he begged her to tell him why, she refused to answer. His heart was broken in two and he left her apartment in tears.

Since then they barely spoke to each other besides work related things. It tore at his heart again and again. Rejection…in the cruelest of ways because he loved her and always will love her.

He felt numb when she died, like he now understood why but still didn't know why she couldn't tell him, why she still kept so many secrets. It made angry yet also once again heartbroken that she never told him her deepest secrets when he told her all his. The event at the flagpole and more about his family. He felt so…betrayed almost.

But how could he hate her? It was impossible to hate her. When the others left, he took out a small wedding ring from his pocket and cried as he felt the pain finally rise up now that he not only lost a true friend but the person he loved more than anything.
