Warning: SPOILERS for chapter 599

Inside, Obito is really, really relieved that there's a kid in his class whose grades are just as bad as his, if not worse, so he walks up to Gai to show him his own test score, to cheer him up, to encourage each other, maybe bond over the whole mess, but before he's even reached the other boy's desk, Gai storms past, shoving Obito right into teacher's pet Ebisu, who squeaks and immediately launches into a lecture, to wave his abysmal score in Kakashi's face and yell some nonsense about beating him next time.

Death is the topic of today's lesson, and while Obito feels his stomach clench, his hands become clammy, he catches – in his need to avoid Sensei's too intense eyes for a second – sight of Gai, sitting at his desk in the last row, a dreamy smile playing around his lips as he doodles something into his notebook, not even pretending to pay attention.

"I think this is yours," Obito says, hoping his stare is withering enough, as he holds out the open notebook, shoves Gai's stupid drawing – which, by the way, looks as if it was made by a three-year-old, actually, make that a brain-damaged three-year-old – right into his stupid face, and all Gai says is, "Huh, thanks", while looking right through him at Kakashi's turned back.

Obito is really pumped to be pitched against Gai for two reasons: a) he owes Gai for that kick to the face earlier (which, okay, kinda saved him from choking to death on candy) and b) he has known Gai for years, so he knows Gai's a one trick pony, and not a very bright one at that – anyway, he's going to win this, and he says so, giving Gai the international sing for "You're going down!", but all Gai does in response is blink and ask, "Do I know you?" and then proceeds to kick Obito's ass in front of Rin, Kakashi and everyone else.

Tobi is what he calls himself these days, and it's a joke, so obvious, the dumbest moron should be able to see through it, but not even genius Kakashi does, so Gai really had no chance in the first place, and when the mask finally lies shattered on the ground and he looks at the two of them, he decides that, this time, it'll be okay if Gai doesn't remember him; he won't need to, he won't have time anyway, because Obito's face will be the last thing he'll ever see.
