Chapter 24

When Jonas woke up, he found himself on a bed. He had liked the feeling of being free in nature. He opened his eyes and looked around. He saw machines all around him. He looked at himself and saw that his tunic had been removed. He was lying on his back and had heart and pulse monitor pads stuck onto his body.
Sitting up he saw something on the other bed. It was Gabriel. He tried to get up but his right leg was immobilized in pain. He recalled the memory of the broken leg on the snowy hill. This felt just like it.
Just then someone came in. She was dressed in white clothes and had a red cross on her white hat. Her identification badge looked nothing like it was supposed to be. It was just a rectangle with the name "Judy" on it. Jonas started to feel frightened.
"What is your assignment?" Jonas inquired.
"Assignment? What do you mean?" asked Judy. "Oh wait. You probably mean my job. I'm a nurse."
"Why isn't it on your identification badge then?" asked Jonas.
"It doesn't have to be," replied Judy.
Seeing the puzzled look on Jonas' face, Judy changed the subject.
Holding up Jonas' identification badge she asked, "Jonas what does 'Receiver of Memory' mean?" "That's my assignment. But you should already know that," said Jonas.
"I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're talking about," Judy said a little nervously.
"Well where am I then? This doesn't look like the healing center to me," said Jonas. "You are at the hospital. When you were found, you and your little friend over there," she nodded her head toward Gabriel, "you two were found at the bottom of a hill just out side of town, with a rickety, red, old sled next to you."
