To the shores of Middle-Earth
When stars were bright and moon was pale
Beneath a dark-blue sky
I followed the nightingale
I heard her hoot and cry.
I left my sleeping bed behind
My spirit was set free
I walked on paths you´ll never find
Next to a moon-lit tree.
My naked feet were touched by dew,
The wind was in my hair,
But all the sounds were just a few
And all the night was fair.
I do not know which road I took
I was inside a dream,
But clear was ey´ry sound and look,
Clear as a river´s stream.
I never had a dream so fair
Like this one long gone by
The nightingale had brought me where
Most secret roads now lie.
My steps walked long until I knew
That in my dream I went
Into a country seen by few;
A long forgotten land.
The fog revealed a coast so bright.
I didn´t know this shore,
That lay there in this silver light-
But memories it bore.
Into the past my dream did lead
Me, trav´ler, and I heard
Sweet voices, songs and I did meet
Strange folk. It sang the bird.
I walked in forests under moon
And joyful was my mind
And I was accompanied soon
by people of strange kind.
The moonlight was inside their hair
And sparkled in their eyes.
Their faces young, their voices fair
They danced beneath the skies.
I did not know where they came from
nor were they were to go.
Those children of High Elvendom
with skins as white as snow.
An Elvenlord once took my hand
But didn´t speak a word.
And hand in hand we crossed the land,
through nature undisturbed.
My heart was full of joy but still
a sadness too was there,
while all the Elves once sang until
They vanished into air.
Again my mind was on a ride
Through countries never seen.
There were still stars, it still was night,
I was inside a dream.
Again grey fog revealed the grass
Where Elves I just had seen.
But now small people came to pass,
were playing on the green.
And they had fluits and harps and bells
And when they saw me come
they said Hallo and someone tells
to join him at his home.
This little folk was nice to see,
they danced and laughed and played
Their children ran around a tree
and all the people ate.
I loved their company so much
I didn´t want to go.
But soon they vanished and as such
I found myself in snow.
I was upon a mountain high
My spirit left the cold
and into mines I soon did fly
where treasures lay of old.
And miners worked into the stones
To find rich things with pride
They burried to the mountain´s bones.
All this I saw that night.
Grim were their faces, good their minds
And soon I lost my fear.
They told of treasures that one finds.
My thoughts once rested here.
But then again I had to leave
though sad now felt my heart
and all my soul was full of grief
to leave new friends apart.
The stars did fade the sun did come
The shores ran out of sight
When once I found myself at home
when day came after night.
And since this time I know, I see
our past was full of bliss
Of unknown peoples, which were were free
But now have gone amiss.
And nearly noone still can hear
their laughter and their song
I often weep a single tear
when sadness would get strong.
For all this laughter now has gone,
It´s hidden for all day
And all their deeds have now been done
And only mem´ries stay.
When stars were bright and moon was pale
Beneath a dark-blue sky
I followed the nightingale
I heard her hoot and cry.
