Like Smoke In The Air
Sara watched Nick walk out the door, down the hallway with that same determination in his step as if it were an average day. Her common sense told her to leave him alone, let him cool off before trying to talk sense into him. But her heart told her, begged her to run after him. So despite the look in Gregs eyes she ran down the hallway, out into the cool Vegas air.
"Nick," her voice floated through the air, dancing around him until he finally turned to look at her.
"I can't do it anymore Sara," the desperation in his voice tore at her. But she walked a little closer.
"You can Nick," he was leaning against his car, words muffled by tears.
"Come on Sar, who are you kidding? You couldn't do it, why should I be able to?"
"Because you're the strong one, the one everybody wants to talk to when it all becomes too much." Nick laughed bitterly and glared at her.
"And who am I supposed to talk to? There's no one around to listen, not anymore," he whispered. Sara inhaled deeply and blinked away tears.
"You're talking about Warrick?" He nodded, standing completely still as she came to stand beside him, hands shoved in her pockets.
"It's not fair, ya know? McKeen may have gotten caught but he's still alive." his shaking voice trailed off.
"He wouldn't have wanted it to end like this. You backing down because it's too much. You're better than that Nicky." she shifted on her feet, her body facing his as he still refused to look at her.
"It doesn't just sneak up on you, you know. It builds up overtime. And now it's hanging around me like smoke in the air, and I can't breath." Nick balled his fists and took a ragged breath. "And I keep thinking maybe if I can just get away from it all things will get easier." he confessed, finally meeting her piercing brown orbs.
"But it won't. It's just gonna get harder if you leave." Nicks gaze hardened, but he listened to her.
"Think about it, you've built relationships here, things you can't find anywhere but here. It's because you took this job in this city that you have all that." Sara lay a hand on his shoulder and for the moment he was thankful for the touch of someone he knew.
"But you left Sara, you left us all behind because you couldn't handle it." he expected her to get mad, to hit him or say something insulting. But all she did was nod.
"I know, and I suffered everyday for it. You don't think I didn't miss seeing Grissom everyday? Or arguing with Catherine. I would have given anything to hear your voice most days or to see Warrick smile." the tears clung to her eyelashes, and slowly spilled down her cheeks.
"I'm asking you, begging you to think about what you're doing. Just please think about it, ok Nicky?" she leaned in and kissed his cheek, her got tears burning his skin as she pulled away. Sara walked back to the door, her hand reaching as he called out to her.
"Sara," she turned her head, hoping to see him walking towards her. But he had already opened his car door, slipping in behind the wheel.
"Sometimes you have to let go, even if that means you're letting go of everything. Because it's the only way you'll ever feel free."
"Did Grissom tell you that?" she asked, trying to smile. He laughed and shook his head.
"No, you showed me that." He started the engine and before she could answer he was gone, slowly disappearing into the mass of neon lights.
Sara bit back her tears, walking into the building with a sense of regret. Everything, every word, every touch shared between them flooded into her memory and even though he was gone, she could help but smile.
The End
