The sound of hard rubber wheels rolling along linoleum lined floors filled her ears as the smell of tulips filled her nose. She took a deep breath momentarily closing her eyes as she heard the whoosh of the automatic exit doors to the hospital open as they approached.

"So, are you going to drive me home, Auggie?" Annie asked a wry grin crossing her face.

"I have been told that I'm an excellent driver, you know." Auggie said bringing the wheelchair to a stop. "I think I did fairly well getting you down here. I didn't run into a single thing."

"That's because I was navigating." Annie added.

"You are a mighty fine navigator, Miss Walker, but that does not take away from my driving ability." Auggie teased.

"We make a pretty good team. You and I." Annie said becoming serious.

"That we do. That we do." Auggie said his tone light, but not as playful as earlier.

Annie and Auggie turned at the sound of approaching tires. "Jerome is going to drive you home since you don't trust my driving ability." He tried to keep the banter going but he could tell the moment was over.

"Auggie?"

He didn't like the tone in her voice. She was low, timid, and afraid. Those were qualities that were not associated with Annie Walker.

"Yes, Annie."

"I can't go home right now. Not tonight. I can't go into the kitchen and see….."

"Okay. Where do you want to go?"

"Can I stay at your place and just sleep on the couch?" Annie asked hopeful. "I just don't want to be alone right now. I need to be with someone I can trust. I seem to be running short on them."

"Of course you can stay at my place. You are taking the bed. I'll sleep on the couch."

"Auggie.." Annie said softly.

"I am not going to argue with you about it."

"Thank you." Annie reached for his hand, grasping it lovingly.

"But, we will have to make one stop on the way, though."

"Oh? What for?"

Auggie smiled at the surprise in her voice. "For ice cream of course. I'm all out."

Even a blind man at that point could feel Annie's smile.
