Ever After

Ginny isn't surprised anymore when Luna walks out of her fireplace unannounced. She smiles when she hears the noise of the floo powder and she simply says, "Kitchen!" When Luna stumbles in, all dusty blonde hair and wayward smiles, Ginny pulls her into a thankful hug.

"I've brought you a—" Luna starts to say, but Ginny cuts her off.

"A Quibbler, right? Thanks, Luna," she says, putting it on the pile from Luna's other visits. It wobbles precariously, and Ginny does a quick spell to make sure it stays put.

Luna looks at her with wide eyes. "I've heard about the connection between pregnancy and mind reading, but I never imagined it was real. Fascinating."

"I didn't read your mind," Ginny says with a laugh. She waves her wand at the oven and a dozen muffins fly out, piling up on a nearby plate. Ginny frowns at the blackened edges. "Of course I get the habit and not the talent," she mutters to herself, and sends the muffins to the garbage.

"Oh, I'll take those," Luna says, waving at the muffins. "They'll be the perfect bait for this new creature I'm tracking."

Ginny shrugs and sends the spoiled baked goods back to the plate, placing it by the fireplace so Luna wouldn't forget. When she goes back to the kitchen, she sees Luna walking out the back door and she follows, watching her pale yellow sundress wave in the wind.

"You shouldn't look so pretty when you come to visit," Ginny complains as they sit under the old tree in the middle of the yard, looking down at her big, old t-shirt she'd stolen from Harry's drawer.

"You're beautiful," Luna says, so easily that Ginny lets herself believe it. "Even if I dress in pretty clothes, it won't change that."

Ginny leans against her shoulder, and she twists her fingers with Luna's. "You always visit right when I need it," she says softly, looking up at the white, cloudy sky between the branches of the tree. "Harry's gone again." Luna doesn't reply, so Ginny keeps talking. "He's at the graveyard. Ron and Hermione are taking shifts, trying to keep an eye on him, but it's hard on them. I tried to visit, but... he only sees Ron and Hermione. Everyone else is an enemy."

"It sounds like a very bad creature must be confusing his mind," Luna says finally. "I could look into it for you, if you'd like."

"Just don't stop visiting," Ginny says, curling up towards Luna, her free hand holding her stomach protectively. "Even after the baby is born. The baby... will need a godmother, after all. Needs you."

"I'll teach it everything I know," Luna says solemnly. Ginny laughs and finally lets her eyes close, drifting off to sleep in the warm care of the summer wind and Luna's open arms, finally safe.
