A/N: Spoilers for up to retrace 79. Drabble on the twin sisters.
People think that it's fitting that the Will of the Abyss is the Alice that's older. They say it suits their characters. The twins think it's the biggest irony the world's ever seen.
Yes, Alice thinks, she's the calmer twin. The gentler one. She prefers peace and kindness as opposed to violence and anger. Her mothering, gentle deposition seems to make her more suited to be the older twin, but it isn't true. Her gentle spirit belies a naïve nature that gives way to cruelty. So much destruction is done on her part because she simply can not, will not, see the world around her. She is calm because she has nothing to be mad at. She is gentle because she simply does not know of violence. She is mothering because from her high perch it is easy to tell others what is right and what is wrong; she'll never have to carry anything out.
The rest of the world is shouldered by her twin.
The younger twin protects. She shields her older sister from the anger and the violence. Whenever Glen comes along, Alice always switches out for her older sister. It is simply what she must do. And Alice has never begrudged her sister time with Jack. Always prepared to make the switch, no matter what she's doing. This Alice is childish and violent. She's got a quick temper and a nasty mouth. What people don't see is that she is childish because she is a child, violent because it surrounds her, temperamental because she soaks in others' emotions, and has a nasty mouth because sometimes they are the only words suited for the situation she sees. This twin is the one that sees the world for the way it is. She sees that Glen is kind. She greets a dying Revis so her twin sister doesn't have to meet death. She sees that Jack is twisted. She notices that Oz is loyal. She is grounded and strong in a way that her sister is not. She is capable of carrying the world and still standing her own ground. Confusion and madness hardly sway her.
She also picks up the pieces. The Tragedy of Sablier, for example.
The younger one picks the mess her twin made; cleans it up in the best way that she can. She tries to put their life back into their hands. To return it to the way it was before Jack Vessalius. When it was only two twins in one body. When they were connected in the most profound way possible. When the only twin with secrets was the youngest. When she could shield her sister from the violence and betrayal and lock it up inside of her. So she dies.
Alice screams while Alice dies. Her younger twin is not supposed to die. She is supposed to stay with her forever. She is supposed to be as invincible as she makes herself seem.
And for once, the older sister tries to protect the younger. She tries to destroy the memories so that Alice will never have to shove scissors into her own body again.
But she is not the protector.
She can not pick up the pieces.
She simply doesn't know how.
So when she freezes, it is up to her twin to play her role again. To carry the world on her shoulders. She plays her part beautifully and merges with Oz. She protects the two things that are most important to her. She stops Oz from killing and she strives to protect Alice from Jack and his influence. But even she cannot stop the Core. So she picks up the pieces, by creating the pieces. She rips the memories apart.
The next thing she knows, she meets a boy. He is too naïve and gentle and happy. And she is Alice. She once again begins to protect what is hers and starts to pick up the pieces.
So ironic, isn't it? That Alice is the older one while Alice is the younger one. Shouldn't they be reversed? Although, who's to say really? It's been said before- they're both Alice afterall…
